My Gr Grands Thomas Murtaugh & Bridget (nee Mimnaugh) his wife came to NYC in the late 1880's from Ireland. Would like to know where in Ireland they came from. Any information would be appreciated.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Do you know much about Thomas and Bridget's emmigration? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure so this may be a good place to look for information-and perhaps even an exact place of origin. For immigration records in the US National Archives go to  http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/

As they entered through New York in the 1880's it is likely that they were processed at Castlegarden You can do a search of their databases here:  http://www.castlegarden.org/

Also, with regards to Bridget's surname Mimmaugh: where did you find this information? Is it possible that if it was  found on a document that the spelling may have being read incorrectly? I have done a search for the surname but can not find any information on it. However, if you put the surname Mimnaugh into the irishtimes databases for households in Ireland during the 19th century it brings back results.  More importantly there are only 6 results and all are in County Tyrone. If ther is a possiblity that this was Bridget's surname it could greatly narrow down your search... You can see the search results here:

Do you know the names of any of their parents or any siblings that they may have had? If you do you could try searching the 1901 and 1911 census records for them. Here is the link: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

I hope that this helps. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,
