I'm looking for a needle in a haystack; as I'm sure we all are. My ggg grandfather and grandmother, Thomas White b:abt 1801 and Mary Kelly White b:abt 1811 immigrated to Ontario, Canada circa: 1840 with 6 children. They settled in Bastard Twp.,Leeds county, Ontario. I have no father's name to connect me back to Ireland but I have reason to believe that Thomas may have been from Limerick and Mary from Tipperary. I have combed the records with no luck. They were Roman Catholic. Does someone have any connection or be able to tell me where to research? I have living family still in Leeds, but they don't seem to remember where in Ireland they were from either. All records just say Ireland.... Please help if you can... The children who immigrated with Thomas and Mary are as follows: Mary b:1823, Bridget b:1825, Patrick b: 1826, Thomas b: 1830, Margret b: 1834, Peter b: 1838. They went on to have other children of whom were born in Leeds county Ontario....... Thank you for your time.

  • Thank you so much Tom for responding.

We are not sure of the exact date of Mary Kelly's DOB or have any information regarding the possibility of Thomas being married more than once. Our information (my cousin and I) comes from the census of Ontario which we understand is not that reliable. The census and further death certificates of some of the children have given their birthdates as well, with only the birthplace as "Ireland".

Would you be so kind to provide me with the information that you have been able to uncover regarding the family, children (birthdates etc.), that you think may match my ancestors?

Do you know if there might be marraige records for Thomas and the 'first' wife on the record you mention, (as the mother) and if there is a marraige record for Thomas  and Mary Kelly?

I know it is asking for a lot, but it would mean so much to me to finally find our "Irish roots". I would love to visit Ireland in the near future and meeting "family" would make it all so much more meaningful. I cannot thank you enough for your kindness and interest in helping me uncover this information.

    Again, I appreciate your efforts,

    best wishes, Barbara  :)

  • Hi there,

I went to www.rootsireland.ie and searched for the baptismal records for the children .  I found three children in co. waterford with fathers name thomas white and mother name Mary (kelly didn't register any records)

Try this site and also the www.irishgenealogy.ie site (totally free) this covers counties that are not covered by roots ireland but has other searchable databases also.

I don't know where you got the childrens dates of birth but I would advise you to keep a very open mind in regard to those.  Gravestone inscriptions have been proved to be some years out in their calculations.  Most people who emigrated had no documentation of any kind and as nobody celebrated birthdays they only guessed at their ages on port of arrival.

    Hope this helps a little,

    Anne
