I am looking for the family of my paternal great-grandfather, William BEATTIE, b. ca. 1819, Mayo, a shoemaker. William apparently arrived in Victoria, Australia, ca. 1872-3 by unknown means. He was (soon?) cohabitating in Emerald Hill (South Melbourne) with Mary HAYES, possibly born Limerick, ca. 30 years his junior. William & Mary had multiple children, of whom only 3 survived. The few extant records are unreliable. William was twice incarcerated in H.M. Victorian prisons [https://prov.vic.gov.au/archive/1C7FA27C-F3A9-11E9-AE98-F13D79CD8856?im…]. William died at Carlton, Victoria, on 10 March 1882. William's parents were recorded on his death registration as John BEATTIE, farmer, and Bridget McDONAGH [Victoria BDM 795/1882]. An inquest into his death was held [The Age (Melbourne, Vic.), 14/3/1882, p 4 (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/202534193); https://prov.vic.gov.au/archive/ADF8A554-F1BC-11E9-AE98-DF5371AF7185?im…]. The informant for the inquest and the registration of his death may have been a sister, Catherine BEATTIE. Catherine Beattie may have been the woman of that name, aged 63, who attempted suicide at Richmond, Victoria, was rescued, remanded into custody and apparently placed in a charitable institution in 1899 (The Herald (Melbourne, Vic.), 28/10/1899, p. 2 (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/241265476)). No records of her arrival nor of her death have been found.
An extensive DNA investigation suggests that William's origins may have been in the vicinity of Knock or surrounding localities, Kiltimagh, Claremorris, Ballyhaunis and Aghamore. Numerous names (with variants) which appear commonly are: Biesty/Beisty, Curry, Flatley, Glavey, Healey, Leech, Leetch, McCann, Murray, O'Brien, Sugrue, amongst others; McDonagh (McDonough?) rarely so.

  • Patricia, Thank you. I will explore further. Unfortunately local records are minimal, unreliable at best. Dan C. Melbourne, Australia

  • In the link to the tithe applotments above, John Beaty follows Edward Murray on the listing.  You mentioned your DNA results included Murrays.
