I am looking for more information on William Carroll. The only information I have is that he was born about 1811 in Haggardstown, County Louth. He was likely to have come to Sydney, Australia in the mid 1830s. On 6/11/1850 he married an Irish famine orphan, Bridget Hopkins from Dunmore Galway in Bathurst NSW. He died in Bathurst 12.11.1861 aged 50.There are no parents listed on his death certificate. I can’t find his birth or when he came out. Any information appreciated. Joanne

  • Hello Joanne & Miriam, I used Roots Ireland and searched 1805 to 1815 in Louth, the closest Carroll is in Darver a parish just south of Haggardstown, an unknown Carroll (it is possible that the birth took place in the mothers home place, this is October 1809) and should be on the link Miriam posted, the mothers name is unusual as McGoogin and I cannot figure what it may be nowadays. That said I immediately find a McGoogin in Carlingford in 1796, attach the link later. There is another unknown Carroll in Dunleer about 8 miles south of Haggardstown. Mother is Berrill a name still about here. This is in 1808, and a Willian Carroll in Wyanstown, Togher, mother Connolly, this is 1806, interesting that one witness is a William McClean so wonder if related. I attached the info below.

Carroll is a common name in mid Louth and in Louth, I had some communication previously with a lady in the US whose Carroll ancestor left Togher / Dunleer in about 1850 too. She thought maybe they were blacksmiths, a lot of blacksmiths left Ireland post famine, there was no work for them. They were blacksmiths in the US.

There is a website on Louth but does not contain certificates but is interesting nonetheless. http://jbhall.clahs.ie/ or Google Louth Genealogical Sources. Also to help you see where the varrious townlands etc are this is a good site https://www.townlands.ie/  In the 1850s there was a full land survey of Ireland and Louth was done in 1853/4 I see 4 different Carrolls in Haggardstown, two in Blackrock village, all are tenants of either Foster or Lord Clermont. http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch that is a name search but it might be quicker to search under Haggardstown as in places and click occupants, there are two in each Haggardstown result. There are also maps attached to this site which you can juggle with but it is tricky and you use the plot number but not for the faith hearted, almost as bad as looking at the registers.
