My 3 x Great Grandparents, William and Mary Cassell (nee Carpenter) were married in June 1835 at Balliboy and Killoughy, in County Offally. They emigrated to Liverpool around 1848. They had the following children all born in Ireland: Thomas (born 1838), John (born 1840), James (born 1842) and Ellen (born 1847) and the following children all born in Liverpool: William (born 1848), Andrew (born 1850) Mary Ann (born 1853). All these children can be traced in the English census records and I have located the baptisms of the children born in Liverpool.

I have been unable to locate the baptisms for Thomas, John, James or Ellen in Ireland. A search of the Balliboy and Killoughy registers record that William Cassell was a witness at the marriage of Patick Dolan and Ellen Cassell. They also record that William and Mary Cassell were sponsors at the baptism of Thomas Cassell son of John Cassell and Cath Maher in 1837..

The Balliboy and Killoughy registers only date from 1821 for baptisms which would be too late for William Cassell who would have been born about 1811 and Mary Carpenter born about 1816. They were not consistent with their ages at the time of the English census returns and therefore their baptisms may be a few years earlier/later than the years stated.

I would appreciate any help tracing their baptisms and parish.

Many thanks

Chris

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and found three records of interest. Looks like the family moved to Birr before 1841. I see you have Ellen born 1847 and the record I had was in 1841. I did not find a record for John.

I gave you links to the two parishes so you can look up the records.

Thomas Castle was baptized on July 1 1836 in Kilcormac (same parish as Killoughy/Balliboy) father William Castle mother M Carpenter.

Ellen Cassell was baptized March 10 1841 in Birr. Father William Cassell and mother Mary Carpenter. They lived on Pound St.

James Castles was baptized August 2 1842 also at Birr. Father was William Castles and mother Mary Carpenter. Pound St.

  • Hi Roger

Thank you so much for this, I tried the links but both of them said 'File Not Found'. No problem though as I have access to the NLI Catholic Registers and have viewed the baptisms. Thomas's was very hard to read but because I knew where to look I found it.

Ellen's age isn't consistent however checking the census returns and burlal records she would have been born between 1845 and 1854. My 2 x Great Grandfather, William was born in 1848 in Liverpool so would assume Ellen was born between 1845 and 1847, although her age could be totally wrong throughout! I wonder if the Ellen born in 1841 died? and subsequently they named another child Ellen? Going to try 'digging around' in the NLI registers a bit more to see if I can solve it. It is great that I know where they moved to and even the name of the street they lived on, hopefully one day I will be able to visit and see where they lived.

Have you any ideas which parishes would be best to search for William Cassell (about 1811) and Mary Carpenter's (about 1816) baptisms?

The Cassells are from my Father's side, and he had other relatives from Ireland. I also have origins in Leinster on my Mother's side so will need to put more messages on in the not too distant future.

Once again many thanks for your help

I use Roots Ireland which is a subscription site. The earliest William Cassell baptismal record in Co. Offaly was in 1872 and the earliest Mary Carpenter was 1830. Likely there is no baptismal record available for William or Mary.

When you have time post your messages regarding the families on your mother's side and one of our volunteers will try to assist.
