May 8, 2020,
Hello, I've traced my ancestry back to William Coleman, born May 1, 1814 near Fermoy, County Cork,
Ireland. I recently located Church Baptism records staring WIlliam Coleman was baptised June 12,
1814 in Lisgoold Parish, Denomination Roman Catholic. William's father is listed as Patrick Coleman
and his mother is listed as Margaret. Family records state he left home "near Fermoy" on April 8,
1840 and landed in New York on June 9, 1840. He Married Margaret Cashman in New London,
Connecticut on March 1, 1843. Margaret was born in Ireland on December 23, 1821. She left Ireland
on April 7, 1842 and landed in New York on May 29, 1842. Family records state that William and
Margaret settled in Derby, Connecticut and "some members of the family" worked at the Ansonia
Clock Factory in Ansonia Connecticut, USA. William became a US citizen on April 5, 1852. "In about
1868 the family moved to the town of New Albin, in Allamakee County, Iowa. William and Margaret
had 10 children between 1846 and 1867. William Died in LaCross Wisconsin, USA on February 8,
1898. Margaret died on March 27, 1905 in or around New Albin, Allamakee County, Iowa. One of
William and Margaret's children, James Henry Coleman, (B 4/9/1850 in New Albin, IA - D 11/06/1913)
in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa was my great-grandfather. Other than myself, my sister and two
daughters, I'm unaware of other decendents of William and Margaret. I'm interested in locating any
of William's relatives if any. After COVID19 passes. I plan to visit County Cork, Fermoy, and Lisgoold
parish. Please advise on how I may learn more.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your attention. Stay Healthy and Best Regards, Mike Coleman EMAIL:

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Can I ask if you found other evidence that ties your William Coleman to Lisgoold parish or perhaps to the parents Patrick and Margaret. The reason I ask is that I can find other William Coleman baptismal records in parishes closer to Fermoy. Both of these records are on the subscription site Roots Ireland. I just want to make sure you have the correct William Coleman. By the way, Roots Ireland only has one baptismal record for a sibling to the William Coleman in Lisgoold. A brother Patrick born 1810. See below.

  • THANK YOU to Castlemore Roscommin,

I am not at all confident that the babtismal records from Lisgoold parish are correct.   It was just the only possibility I became aware of during my untrained research attempts.  I do have high confidence in all of the other information provided.  It is actual family record that has been handed down through the generattions of Colemans.   Is Castlelyons or Castletownroch closest to Fermoy?  Is there a way to distingush which is most likely the William Coleman born "around the town of Fermoy on May 1, 1814"?

In appreciation of your work and attention, I'm going to make a donation to Ireland XO.   I am working to get PayPal to accept my replacement credit card.

Stay Healthy and God Bless Ireland.

    Best Regards,

    Mike Coleman

Thanks for your comments. Below are the two records I mentioned. Castletownroche is just to the west of Fermoy parish and Castlelyons is southeast of Fermoy. Castleroche town is about ten miles from Fermoy and Castlelyons town is 4-5 miles.
