My ancestral lines are Duggans from Tipperary and Feeneys from Sligo. My ancestor Michael Duggan b: 1811, has a well documented tie to myself here in Ontario, Canada. There is a list of family members that name William Duggan and Margaret Quinlan of Tipperary as his parents. It also lists their children - born: Michael 1811, Ireland (my direct ancestor), Mary 1813 Ireland, Annie 1814 Tipperary, Catharine about 1820, Patrick 1821 Tipperary, Richard 1825 Ireland and one other son James, birth location unknown. Michael first appears in Upper Canada in 1834 on a marriage record. These children appear to have come to Ontario, Canada at some point. I don't know if parents William and Margaret came to Canada though? I haven't been able to pair up William & Margaret or their children in Tipperary on any on-line searches. I'd love to be able to find their Townland of origin, but I know records get a bit spotty the further we go back. Would appreciate some advice on how to approach this search.

I searched on the subscription site FindMyPast.ie and came up with a lead although it may be a different family. The record located was a July 31 1824 baptismal record for a Catherine Duggans with father William Duggans and mother Mary Quinlan. The record was in the Doon RC parish in Co. Limerick right on the border with Co. Tipperary. The townland was Toomaline in Doon civil parish.

    No other records came up.

Have you considered DNA testing. Possibly you will have matches with 3rd or 4th cousins who might have more information on the origins of your Duggan/Quinlan family in Ireland.

  • Hi Roger, Appreciate you taking a look at this. I will take a closer look at the lead you suggest as I've found that people sometimes go by their second names or nicknames.  I have put in a DNA sample with Ancestry.com and have some matches with trees, but none that have gotten past Michael Duggan 1811. I'm still searching and trying to contact a few that have private trees to see if they've gotten further.  I haven't registered with Find My Past, but your search is very helpful in that respect and thank you for giving me the Parish and Townland you've found. Thanx again   .....   Gary
