Hello: I am looking for information on the parents of the above couple, who were married on Nov. 12, 1863, in the Parish/District of Ramelton First, Co. Donegal. Their children were born in Letterkenny, so I imagine that is where the family lived. William's father was also a William, and Jane Anne's father was John; I don't have the names of the mothers. I am looking for any additional information on the parents of William and Jane Anne in order to help with my ancestry search. Thanks!

  • Lori,

William McConnell and Jane Mulherrin gave their townlands (addresses) as Cashelanaghan when they married.  Jane’s father was John and he is listed in Griffiths Valuation on plot 5 in that townland. That was 3.5 acre farm. Today the property is off to the east of the R245 road from Letterkenny to Ramelton. The farm buildings have all been demolished (judging by Google Earth) and so it’s all just farmland now.

John Mulherrin died in 1887, aged 73. A widower. The informant was Thomas McConnell his grandson, of the same townland. Can’t see his wife. Probably she died before 1864 when death registration started.

This Mulhern family in may be related. There were only 16 houses in the townland and they were the only Mulherns/Mulherrans so I’d guess there’s a relationship.

The 1863 marriage was in Ramelton 1st Presbyterian church. (The parish is Aughnish, not Ramelton).  Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church, so you can probably assume she was Presbyterian, and may find Jane Anne’s baptism and that of any siblings in that church’s records. And that may give you her mother’s name. The baptism and marriage records start in 1803. There’s a copy in PRONI. (the Public Record Office) in Belfast. I don’t know if they are on line anywhere but you can view them in person if you go to PRONI. The records are probably not available on-line.

William McConnell may also have attended the same church, and if so you may find his parents from the same source. If you are unable to go yourself, you could employ a researcher. Researchers in the PRONI area: http://sgni.net

William & Jane Anne had a son John born 24.10.1864 in Cashelshanaghan:

I had a look for William McConnell’s father’s death but could not find one. Possibly he died pre 1864 which is when death registration started.
