Hi I'm researching several branches of family tree that have their roots in various parts of Ireland.
I'm looking for information on the Steele family, my 2nd great grandfather, William Steele born around 1831 in Cortown. He was married to Mary Elliot His father was Alexander Steele 1809-1884 who was married to a woman with the surname McMeachan. A branch of the family moved across to Scoltand settling in Ayrshire where most of us decendants remain to this day. I would appreciate any help in tracing any branch of the family who remain in Ireland or who have emigrated further afield. According to my DNA results there are many of us scattered across the globe. I'm keen to make any connections and discover as much as I can about the Steeles, their ancestors and decendants. My family tree is posted on Ancestry.co.uk. This is the link to William Steeles bio https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/177702278/person/302…; I appreciate any help anyone might be able to offer, Thanks David Wilson

David:
Cortown townland is in the civil parish of Balrathboyne. I assume your Steele family was Church of Ireland? If that is correct then the early records for that parish were destroyed in the 1922 Public Records Office fire in Dublin.
I did locate an 1855 civil marriage record (see third record at the link below) in Co. Down. William was living in Ballygowan townland in Comber civil parish. Mary lived in the parish of Newtown Ards. Both parishes are in northeast Co. Down.

Did William and Mary stay in Ireland?
Let me know if you have questions.

Roger, thanks for the prompt reply. Greatly appreciated! By 1861 William and Mary had relocated to Auchinleck in Ayrshire- a small mining village where he found wotk as an Iron Miner. They had two small children. The family have remained in Auchinleck andd the Cumnock area to the present day. This is the maternal line of my family. The information you've provided fills in yet another gap in the jigsaw. I'm eager to discover if any of their descendants are still living in Ireland or where else they may have emigrated- I assume they left during the famine. Thanks again for this info. Kindest regards, David
