Hello!   I am seeking information/trying to locate my ancestors, Wilson Baxter and Ann (Keenan) Baxter.  I have affixed their daughter, Jennie Louisa Baxter Smith's death return record, which provides what seems to be "C.F., Ireland" as the birthplace of Wilson and Ann.  According to the death record (attached),  Jennie was born in 1857 in Rhode Island.   I found two Ireland Marriages 1619-1898 records that seem to be the same entry, but I am not sure if they connect to her parents, Wilson and Ann.  The first is a marriage on November 10, 1857 in Aghalurcher, County Fermanagh, Ireland and lists Wilson's father as John Baxter and Wilson's spouse as Anne Jane Alexander.  A similar entry is listed in Ireland Civil Registration 1845-1913 - a marriage on November 10, 1857 between Wilson Baxter and Anne Jane Alexander in Linaskea, County Cavan, Ireland.  (Wilson's father is also listed as John Baxter.)  My ancestry DNA shows that I have markers in Ulster.  My American Baxter branch, to my knowledge, practiced the Catholic faith.  I am wondering if there is any detailed information on this couple and if Jennie Louisa Baxter's birth may have happened in Ireland (not Rhode Island)?

Thank you,

Kerrin DuBee

  • Kerrin,

I did not see the attachment.  Perhaps you might send it again.

Names on death certificates are provided by a third party--and obviously not by the deceased.  The names are often incorrect.  So keep that in mind.

If you can find a record in which Ann or her husband provided the information about themselves or their parents, such as a marriage record, it would be more reliable.

It's also possible that Ann was surnamed Alexander, married Baxter, and later married Keenan.

  • I believe C. F. may stand for Co. Fermanagh.

  • I think that both probably marriage indexes refer to the same event. Lisnaskea is in the parish of Aghalurcher, in Co. Fermanagh. I think “Linaskea, Co. Cavan” is a mistake. There isn’t anywhere of that name in Cavan.

The 1857 couple married in Lisnaskea Register Office, sometimes an indication of a mixed marriage, though there can be other reasons for not marrying in church. But obviously Ann’s maiden surname is Alexander, not Keenan.  So is this the correct couple?

William lived in Foglish and Ann Jane in Tattyreagh.  Both townlands are beside each other, just outside Fivemiletown. Modern address is Grogey Rd. So Wilson married the girl next door.

Wilson’s father John Baxter probably lived in Tattynuckle. Griffiths Valuation (1862) lists a John Baxter farming there (Ploy 11a, 17 acres). That’s adjacent to Tattyreagh. John Alexander may have been living in Tattenabuddagh (plot 22b a labourer’s cottage) which is adjacent to Foglish.

Birth registration only started in Ireland in 1864. I searched the records 1864 – 1873 for children to parents named Baxter & Alexander but did not find any. That suggests that either the couple had no children or that they had left the area by 1864.

If you think that Jennie Louisa might have been born in Ireland, you would need to search local church records. If you think she was baptised RC, then Aghalurcher RC parish has records from 1835 which are on Ancestry. I searched them but did not find her baptism in Ireland.

Looking at the 1901 census of Fermanagh, I do notice that all the Alexander’s in the county were Protestant. Mainly Church of Ireland, plus 1 Presbyterian family. No RC Alexanders at all. Likewise Baxter is mostly Church of Ireland too though there are a few RC Baxter families. (Both names strike me as being Scottish in origin, so you might expect them to be Protestant. Many Scots settled in Fermanagh in the 1600s as part of the Plantation).

Here’s what I think must be Ann Jane’s borther John Alexander, also of Tattyreagh, marrying in Lisnaskea Register Office in 1859:

Also Margaret Baxter, daughter of John Baxter, marrying in Mullaghfad Church of Ireland (in the parish of Aghalurcher). So possibly a sister to Wilson Baxter. She was Church of Ireland.:
