Charles Taggart arrived in Australia as a Convict in December 1818 on the Earl St Vincent.   He had been convicted of House Robbery and transported for 7 years.     He was 26 years old, Catholic and had been a Coachman.    I believe his father was also named Charles.     His description upon arrival in Australia was that he had a medium to fair complexion; brown hair; hazel eyes and 5'5" tall.

Charles married Elizabeth McNamara in Sydney in 1828 and they had 8 children.  Charles Valentine, Ann, James, Mary Jane, Michael, John, William and Jospeh.

Charles died in 1872 in Putty Road, Howes Valley, Wollombi, NSW, Australia of skin cancer of the forehead.

Any information about the Taggart or McTaggart family of Antrim would be appreciated.

  • Without some idea of where in Co Antrim he lived, plus ideally his denomination, it will be very difficult to trace him. There are unlikely to be any court papers. Have you searched the newspapers? The Belfast Newsletter is on the Ancestry site. It was published twice a week, and so if you know when he was tried it may be possible to find a report of the trial, though the details tended to be sparse.
