My gt. gt grandfather, Daniel McHenry, was born in County Antrim 17 August 1817, to John and Bridget McHenry.  The name was originally spelled McKendry.  They sailed from Belfast to to New York sometime before 01 May 1838, possibly around 1832.

According to family lore our McHenrys were from Ballymena, but I can find nothing to substantiate this.

Bridget was born in January 1778.  She died in Ontario Canada in July 1871. Despite much research have still to discover her maiden name!

According to an 1895 biography, Daniel's father John had three brothers who settled in Philadelphia, unfortunately no names or dates given.

I have traced this family extensively in Canada and the USA but am hoping someone can shed some light as to where in County Antrim they came from.

  • Hi,

Although the Griffiths Valuation (showing range 1847-64) is past your target years, it can still be a helpful tool to help locate the descendants/Ancestors of others with the same names, helping to give clues on where to look as in the following link:

    www.irishtimes.com

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm?fuseaction=surnamemap&Surname=McKendry&UserID=.

Many variations appear to exist in the spelling and variants, Hendrie, Hendry, McKindry, McHendry, McKendry, and McKindry.

There is much data that can be gleaned that is free from this site, (for instance under placenames search), a positional map is shown with a listing of Townlands  or streets that might aid your search.

  • Hi there, For what it may be worth, my gtgt grandfather was born in Antrim July 1870 and registered as Alfred McKendry, his brother was registered as Alexander McHenry in Ballyhackamore(Belfast) in 1866. Their father was Archibald McKendrick born 1820 somewhere in Ireland, still looking for where but my cousin is convinced it was around Belfast somewhere.
    Good Luck.

  • Family lore has my McHenry ancestors emigrating to Pennsylvania from County Antrim in the early 1800's. I have no idea what town they are from. My great-grandfather, James Clugston McHenry, subsequently emigated with his wife and infant son from Catasauqua, PA to Ontario, Canada in 1888. My grandfather was Morris James McHenry and my father was Gordon Morris McHenry.
