I am looking for information on the Irish ancestors of John Crowe (c.1822-1889) and Agnes Anderson (c.1823-1869) who arrived in Australia as Bounty Immigrants on board "Briton" in 1844.

My unconfirmed research says:

John Crowe Born c.1822 in Belfast, Antrim; Died 25 Mar 1889 in NSW. His parents were Thomas and Mary Crowe.

Agnes Anderson Born c. 1823 in Belfast, Antrim; Died Jun 1869 NSW in 1844. Her parents were John and Barbara Anderson.

They were married in 1844, probably in Belfast.

They had 8 children in Australia. Thomas George (1845-1886) my ancestor; Emily (1847-1904); Mary (1848-1913); John Anderson (1849-1928); Ann (1851-1853); Robert Daniel (1853-1917); Agnes (1855-1856) and Hans Anderson (1858-1917).

I would love any information on their Irish Family.

  • Hi Sandi

Apologies for the delay. Have you had any luck on ancestry.com or familysearch.org - these would be the basis of a search to confirm the above information

  • You haven’t said what denomination the Crowe/Anderson couple were. However their marriage was before the start of statutory marriage registration in Ireland (April 1845 for non RC and 1864 for RC). So you won’t find a marriage certificate for them. You might find their marriage in church records but to do that you need to know what denomination and which church. (There are about 150 churches in Belfast and not all have records from that period that have survived). What does survive isn’t all on-line either. So difficult to research.

Death registration started in 1864. I searched for a Barbara Anderson death in the Belfast areas 1864 – 1915 but did not find one, suggesting perhaps she died before 1864. John Anderson is a fairly common name. There were several hundred who died in Ireland in the period 1864 – 1915. Two in Belfast. One in 1870 aged 86, another 1872 aged 73. You could have a look at either of those to see if they might be ruled in or out. I could not find anyone named Thomas or Mary Crowe of the right age who died in Belfast 1864 – 1905. You can view the original death certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.
