I have only recently discovered my family connection to Co. Cork. I believe I am descended from Edward Kirby, an attorney in Cork and Temple St, Dublin. His wife Alicia appealed to Earl Talbot for assistance in 1821 as her husband was ill and their son, a soldier, had recently died in St Kitts, West Indies (Parliamentary Papers). Edward and Alicia also had a daughter Emily born 1804, died unmarried in Liverpool in 1855. And two more sons, at least. Edward Kirby junior, born c. 1795, studied at Trinity College Dublin, ordained as a COI minister in 1822 in Cloyne, then curate in a number of parishes in County Dublin, before finally In Randalstown, Co. Antrim where he died in 1859, leaving a wife, nee Emily Henchy.

William Kirby, a sheriff's officer, born c 1801, presumably Co. Cork. In  June 1823 at St Thomas Dublin, COI, he married Euphemia Talbot, daughter of John Noble Talbot, excise officer at Custom House, Dublin. This couple are my great great great grandparents. They had three sons, Edward, John and Thomas in Ireland, before moving to Liverpool about 1833 where two daughters were born, Charlotte and Alicia. John did not marry and died young in Liverpool. Edward married but also died young. Thomas became a chemist in Liverpool and left a number of children. Charlotte married Edward Medcalf and settled in Kendall, Cumbria, England. Alicia married an English master mariner Charles Phillips Newman from the Isles of Scilly, Cornwall. She appears to have been named for her grandmother, the eldest Edward Kirby's wife

Timothy Kirby and Thomas Kirby, both apothecaries in Cobh 1818-1825 are probably connected to this family. Also possibly the Dublin surgeon John Kirby of Harcourt St.

  • Dear Jenni

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you. You seem to have gathered quite a body of information about the family already, well done!

Out of interest have you used ancestry.com to search for instances of the family name in public member trees or messages?

The Representative Church Body Library hold CoI records in Dublin. It might be of interest for you to look at their website to see what they hold outside of the parish registers themselves:

Let us know if you learn anything new

  • Hi Clare

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I am aware of the RCB library and had been in email contact with them before my first visit to Ireland last month. It was because of their help that I finally discovered my Kirbys came from Cork. I visited RCB on 7 August this year and made a breakthrough!

I was disappointed not to be able to take a (non flash) photo of the parish record showing the 1823 marriage of my William Kirby and Euphemia Talbot, but was very happy even to see it. I could see from the state of the parchments that others looking there might not be so lucky.

One of the staff did let me photograph some pages in a 21st century book (Clergy of Dublin and Glendalough) from the library with one tiny paragraph about the COI minister Rev Edward Kirby who married this couple. The brief bio said he was born in about 1795 in Cork. This would appear to be based on his age in the Trinity College Dublin records. I have independently confirmed that this Edward Kirby is the brother of my ancestor William Kirby, and of Emily Kirby who died in Liverpool in 1855. I have found their father Edward Kirby (senior, an attorney at law) referred to in the EPPI records (www.dippam.ac.uk/eppi/) and hope the archivist will soon respond to my recent email. Little by little I am making some progress after years of wondering!

So thank you for now from Australia

  • Hi Clare and Jenni

I am new to this site and this is my first letter.  I also have a connection with Kirby's and Cork.

My gg grandfather was Michael Kirby, he married Margaret Cogan I think in 1843 in Cork.  Their children were James 1843, Patrick 1844, Edmund 1845 and Margaret 1848 (my g grandmother).

Margaret married John Costello in 1870 in Cork.  Their children were John Francis 1874, Patrick Joseph 1877-1904, Michael James 1881, Thomas Michael 1883-1956, and Margaret Mary 1885-1892.

My grandfather was Thomas Michael who married in Chorlton on Medlock, Lancs and immigrated to Aus in 1908.

Does anybody know anything about his brothers John Francis and Michael James Costello?  I think Michael married Mary Lynch and had one son Michael (1911 census).  I can't pick up John anywhere I can be sure of.  Would love to find descendants of my two great uncles.

    Thank you also from Australia.

    June.

  • Hi June

So sorry. Don't know anything about a Michael Kirby connected with my family. Have Edward, Emily and William. Do you know where in Cork? Or are you not so sure of Cork?

    I am in Perth WA.

Have you looked at the links on the Cork page at Ireland Reaching Out?  I had a month sub to RootsIreland and didn't really find anyone of mine, but have been mapping out the families and tying this into the Tithes and Griffiths. Process of exclusion really.

    Best wishes
