Hello.  Can you tell me what parish Tanneybrake is in?  My gggrandfather, William Sloan, emigrated from  Tanneybrake to America mid-1800s, first settling in Rhode Island then permanently in Pittsburgh, Pennsyvania.  Thanks, Don

  • Hi,

The site at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Kells/Tanneybrake/ has it that Tanneybrake is Kells, Antrim.

The Irish Genealogy Toolkit can help lead you to which records are located where .

If Willliam emigrated mid 1800s then you mighgt be able to trap a residence location at

On researching my family in U.S for the 1800's. I often find google e-books to be a great help. Using the search tool to only pull up free ebooks, I have been able to find a lot of historical worksfor the area they were located in and often other data leading to point of origin, etc...

    Good Luck! Jeanette

  • Thanks Jeanette, this is very helpful!  I recently learned about my Antrim ancestors, until then I thought everyone was from Dublin town and Counties Wicklow and Donegal.  A friend in Belfast did a bit of research for me and found current-day Sloans living in Tanneybrake!  I need to contact them.  I will also check out the links you sent.  I know from my Dublin research that Griffiths can be a valuable source of good info.

Take care and keep in touch, and good luck with your work too!

  • Hi,

    You are quite welcome!

Contacting "cousins" can be very rewarding. I did so with a 2nd cousin on a different branch and through this contact was able to retrieve pictures and data of great and 2x great grandparents, whom initially we did not  know anything about. She inherited them after her mother, mothers sisters and grandmother passed (My great aunts and Great grandmother). As a surprise this cousin sent letters  my grandfather sent to his parents when he was in World War 2, a College English book my great grandmother had in the late 1800s before she married my great grandfather, as well as a homemade cookbook created by a great aunt that contained many favorite family recipes. I had so many tears of joy in seeing their faces the first time, as it turns out I am the spitting image of my great grandmother. Genealogy is very rewarding in itself, but this was all frosting.

    Take care, Jeanette
