Hi there,

My great, great grandfather Thomas Fagan/Fagin was born in Ireland.  Family talk said he was born in Antrim, Belfast in 1823.  He married Jane Smart (born 1826) in Ireland 1847.  They had many children (10). Their son Thomas, my great grandfather was born in between 1841-1848 in Belfast.  Thomas, Jane and Thomas  came to Canada after 1846.  The other 9 children were born in Canada.  The young Thomas married Susan Johnston in Ontario in 1877.  Thomas and Susan had 6 kids and spent time in Ontario and Michigan USA and back to Canada in Alberta where they are buried.  My struggles are due to their names switching from Fagan/Fagin and birthdates vary on each census I find!  Also I'm not finding any birth records or ship records.  If anyone has any ideas or info that would be great!  Thanks

  • Hi Rachel

The closest birth / baptism records for Thomas Fagan + surname variants 1823 in Antrim on www.rootsireland.ie/ are way too late - 1839 & 41

However there are 8 in other counties in 1823:

2 in Westmeath 2 in Meath & 1 in Tipperary Offaly Kildare & Down

There is a record of Jane Smart 1826 in Antrim - the parish is ARDKEEN C of I

I could not find a record of their marriage or any of the children's births

I checked the parish of the Fagan Down record and it is KILBRONEY RC so I wonder if it was likely an RC and C of I would have married? However both parishes show up in the parish map of DOWN

As you probably know there are some public member trees on ancestry which have Tom & Sara but none has his parents!
