Hello,
I'd be interested in any information anyone had on John McCambridge, born on 1806 in Armoy, Antrim. His wife's name was Rose or Rosette, and children John, Mary, Rose and Dennis. I have little else to go on. The family lived in Esrkine, Scotland at the time of the 1841 Census, but show are being from Ireland. They later moved to Baltimore, Maryland in the US. I've confirmed John was born in Armoy as his grave is here in Baltimore, and it specifically names his place of origin.
Thanks!

Hi,
Thank you for your message. It is great that you found his specific place of origin! This is one of the most important pieces of information you need when looking at family history in Ireland.
One of the main sources of information for the time is church records. Unfortunately, Catholic records for Armoy and surrounding parishes do not begin very early. You can use the Irish Times websites to see what Catholic records are available in specific parishes:
http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/antrimrc.htm
Church of Ireland records usually tend to have an earlier start date as it was the official church of Ireland at the time. Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42
Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.
Depending on when John was married you may be able to find his marriage certificate.
You could also check for record of the family in the land acts pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
Some other websites that may be helpful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

It may also be an idea to contact the Ulster Historical Foundation for some assistance however a fee may apply. Here is their email: enquiry@uhf.org.uk
I hope that this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
