I would like to find more about my family that came from this area.   My 2nd Great Grandfather was Samuel Drain (or Adrain) born in Antrim County in 1827 (October, I think)  His wife was Jane Lowry (or Lawry), she was born in Oct 134 in Londonderry?.  They were married on 7 Jun 1849 in Ballywilln, Londonderry, Coleraine Dist., Ireland. The marriage certificate says that Samuel's father was William Drain (Adrain) and Jane's father was Samuel (Lowry/Lawry).

They immigrated to the U.S in August of 1849.  The Philadelphia Passeenger and Immigration Llist shows that Samuel was age 20, that the port of arrival was Philadelphia, and the port of departure was Liverpool, the place of origin was Ireland, his occupation was a farmer, their destination was USA, the ship name was "Finland', National Archive Series #425, microfilm #69, list #172.  I found this information on Ancestry.com

I have quite extensive info for Samuel and Jane and their family in the U.S. but would love to find more about their parents in Ireland - - when were they born?  died?  other children?  etc.

I did have someone once tell me that there was a Drain Road/Street/???/ in the area.

I would appreciate any help/info you could help me with.

Thanks

Kathy

  • Kathy,

It’d be helpful if you could attach a copy of the 1849 marriage certificate. Or failing that let us know the couples townlands (addresses) and their father’s occupations. This may help us trace them in Griffiths Valuation and other records.

Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church which should be on the certificate, (unless it was a Registry Office marriage). That church may be the place to look for her baptism and that of any siblings.
