Hi! I'm new to this and hope I haven't posted this twice...

I'm looking for descendants of James Harrington (d 1889 Islandahoe) and Catherine Scally Harrington (d 1890 Islandahoe).  They had several children.  I am descended from their son Henry (d 1898 in Ballycastle) and Frances McGrotty Harrington (d 1888 in Ballymoney).  Henry and Fanny were married 1 Dec 1875 at Derrykeighan.  They, too, had several children one of whom was my grandfather, John Henry Harrington (b 29 Jul 1883 in Ballyratahan).

James and Catherine's son, Samuel, was married at Roseyards and is also buried there with his wife and young son.

When Henry and Fanny had both passed, at least two of their children were taken in by Henry's brother, George, and his wife, Julia Mann.  They eventually moved to New York.  Both Henry and John Henry were Masons.

John Henry married Caroline Nelson in 1911.  They had three children - Henry Byron, Frederick Robert and Dorothy Jane. I am the daughter of Dorothy Jane.

John Henry had a sister named Sarah Frances Harrington who stayed in Ireland and married James Young.  Perhaps descendants of any of these folks are interested in family history and will happen upon this post.

  • Sarah Harrington?s marriage to James Young was registered in Ballymoney Apr ? Jun 1911 Volume 1, page 197.

You can order a photocopy of the certificate from GRO Roscommon for ?4.  http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You have to download and print off the form. Then either post or fax it back to them. You can?t e-mail it to them. However if you want them to e-mail the cert to back to you, they will do that, so tick the relevant box.

Put the reference details on the form (anywhere). Don?t worry about leaving some boxes blank. As long as GRO have the location, name(s), year, quarter (where there is one), volume and page number they should find it.

Tradition was to marry in the bride?s church (which will be on the certificate unless it was a Registry Office marriage). That may be the place to look for her baptism and that of any siblings.

Assuming they were born in what is now Northern Ireland, you would be able to find out what children they had by contacting GRONI in Belfast and getting a search done (for a fee).  http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/gro

This looks to be Sarah Harrington in the 1911 census in the Ballymoney areas:

    Same family in 1901:

  • Many thanks dear AHOGHILL ANTRIM!  I had no idea someone would find and respond to my posting so quickly.  The data you shared and suggestions for learning more are helping to fill in blanks in the old family tree.  Again, thank you.

  • The 1911 marriage certificate for James & Sarah is now on-line free to view on the irishgenealogy site.

They married on 17.4.1911 in Ballymoney Register Office. Both resided in Dervock. James father was another James, a labourer. I searched the birth records for 1911 to 1916 to see if they had any children in Northern Ireland but found none.  So possibly they left Ireland.

James Young might have fought in the war and may have been killed. However if so, he is not named on the local war memorial:

    http://www.ulsterwarmemorials.net/html/dervock__county_antrim.html

Or the family might have moved to Scotland, England or elsewhere. Very hard to find him without more information and such a common name.

If you want more information about Sarah’s ancestors, you should be able to trace her in the 1901 census and her birth on the irishgenealogy site without too much difficulty.
