Does anyone have any information or suggest any sources for Martha (Margaret) Campbell, daughter of John Campbell and Catherine Campbell need Reid who was born in Drummaul? I know her immediate family but am interested in any information about her life and surroundings.
Any information would be welcome.
Also does anyone know about a possible typhoid epidemic in the area in the late 19th early 20th century?
Thanks in advance.

Catrina,
Can?t help you with the Campbell family but you could try the Randalstown Historical Society for general information about the area in the early 1900s. I live in the town and I have never heard of a typhoid epidemic, but it?s possible it?s been forgotten about with time. They may know.

There?s plenty of photos of Randalstown in older days on the net. If you want a copy of the Ordnance Survey memoirs from 1836, I have that for the parish, and could let you have a copy. It goes into a fair amount of detail about life in the village then.

Hi Elwyn
Thank you very much for your suggestions.
The Ordinance Survey memoirs is a little early for the period I am loking at at the moment but I may be back to take advantage of your kind offer in the future :)

Elwyn,
Just what is this Ordnance Survey? I might be interested in receiving a copy. Can you tell me the distance from Drummaul to Randalstown? How long it takes by car? Thank you.

Janet,
The OS memoirs were a detailed description of Ireland in the 1830s. They were commissioned by the Duke of Wellington (then Prime Minister) in order to facilitate a uniform valuation for local taxation purposes. Accurate maps were drawn up (often for the first time) and so army engineers from the Ordnance Survey department were used for the survey work. The records were compiled parish by parish. You cna buy them from the Ulster Historical Foundation. Drummaul is in Co Antrim volume VI.
The description of Drummaul runs to about 30 pages and describes the landscape, main houses, peoples occupations, hobbies and pastimes, things of historical interest in the area, schools, religious breakdown of the population, character of the people, activity in the linen industry, farming practices, courts, public transport, arrangements for looking after the poor, dress habits, fuel, local traditions, emigration, schools, exports and there?s a list of people who left the area in 1835 & 1836.
Randalstown is in the middle of the parish of Drummaul. It?s where the various parish churches are situated. So it takes literally no time at all to get there.

Elwyn,
Thank you for that information. I might be interested as that is the time period my ancestor Arthur McCormick/Devlin emigrated to the US. Also thank the information on Randalstown.
