Wondering if anyone knows anything about the O'Neills who resided at Clonkeen in the parish of Drummaul, County Antrim ?

My ancestor was Anne, the daughter of Charles O'Neill of Clonkeen, she was the wife of Hugh O'Neill Esq. of Carlane, whose home was delineated amongst the noblemen and gentlemen's seats of County Antrim on Lendrick's Map (1783). She died in 1805, he in 1814 ; they were buried in the family vault of the O'Neills of the Feevagh at Cranfield.

They would have been born sometime about 1820-1830. The Tithe Applotments for Antrim (1834) show two O'Neill households on that town land, that of Gordon and Owen O'Neill. Having difficulty searching by name in Griffith's right now will update if I can get it to work, it is showing me all surnames.

Appreciate any knowledge about who they were or where they might have lived there. I have a vague mention of them being of the family of North Clanaboy (descendants of Sir Brian Mac Felim or his brother Aodh (Hugh) from whom Sir Neil O'Neill descended), but the writer never took up the subject of "The O'Neills of Clonkeen".

  • I don’t see any O’Neills in Clonkeen in Griffiths., Both Gordon & Owen must have died or moved away by then.

The farms were on land owned then by Lord O’Neill of Shane’s Castle. Though most of the estate records were lost in the 1822 fire at the castle, a couple of sets of rental books have survived and  are in PRONI. T1024/1 dates to 1829 and T1024/2 to 1831. I have used them in the past.  The 2 volumes show the tenants on the farms in those years, and in some cases details of the leases they were on. Some were 3 lives leases and you sometimes get genealogical information from that eg the ages, and relationships.
