I learned from Emeraldancesters.com that the marriage of my great-grandparents, Joseph Dinsmore and Rose Gorman, took place in Parish Finvoy at Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic Church on 6 February 1870. This was my great-grandfather's second marriage as his first wife, Jane Laverty, died. In the indexed record of his first marriage, his father was listed as Francis. (There is also a record of his marrying Margaret Laverty on the same day, which I believe was the witness. So I'm not so trusting of the Dinsmore-Lavery marriage record from OurLady and Saint Patric RC Church in Parish Ballymoney). In the indexed record of his marriage to my great-grandmother Rose Gorman, his father's name is listed as Hugh Dinsmore. Since I am unable to see the original marriage records, I am uncertain of his father's name. I will be in Ballymoney from 25 June until 30 June and am hoping to look at original records.

Does St. Joseph's RC Church still exist? If yes, are records from 1870 available? Who would I contact to set up an appointment to view Church records? Does anyone currently have access to my great-grandparent's marriage records who could tell me what my gg-grandfather's name is?

I so appreciate all the wonderful volunteers with Ireland Reaching Out. You are the best!

Most parish priests will allow you to see the original records but some are very busy and there are some who won?t give permission. So a bit of charm always helps.

  • Thank you. You're the best! And I'm saying that not to exhibit a bit of charm, but because I mean it.

  • This may be a long shot but

I have a Rachel Dinsmore Hay who married a Neal Rainey (marriage 13 July 1839 • 1st Ballymoney Presbyterian Church, Drumskea) Rachel's parents I have are James Hay and Margaret Dinsmore.

Neal Rainey is my 4th Great Uncle. Neals' brother Henry is my 4th Great Grandfather, his daughter Jane Rainey married my 3rd Great Grandfather James McCaldridge (Alexander) The McCaldridge's all seemed to hail from Finvoy and surrounding area.

If there is a connection, it would be good to share information with you.

  • Hi, Mandy.

I don't seem to have a Rachel Dinsmore in my tree. My Dinsmore family lived in Ballymoney (Ballynloob section) and were Catholic. I believe they were the rare Catholics among the majority of Presbyterian Dinsmores. Margaret Dinsmore was married to my great-great-grandfather Hugh Dinsmore.

Have you done any DNA testing? If yes, I have done testing through ancestry.com and have uploaded it to GEDmatch.com. If you have done DNA testing and your results are at either site, let me know and I will give you my ancestry.com tree name (if that's where you did it) or my GEDmatch.com ID number (if you have DNA results there).

    Good luck.
