My great-great grandfather, William Long, was born to John Long and Agnes Hill Long 23 February, 1833, and baptized 6 March, 1833 at the 1st Islandmagee Presbyterian Church. I visited the church, May 2005, speaking with Rev. Stephen Moore, who copied records from the baptism. Rev. Moore told me many of the records I would need for further research were destroyed by fire.
My notes are not very good, but I have reason to believe William may have had siblings
James (DOB unknown);
John, b. 1831;
Thomas, b. November, 1834;
Margaret, b. January, 1837;
Anne, b. May, 1840; and
Matilda, b. February, 1843.
William may have had an uncle, also named William (John's brother), who was married to Margaret Evans 9 August, 1839, also at 1st Islandmagee Presbyterian Church.
We do not have any information on John Long's forebears.
We believe John Long was a ship's captain, and that John and Agnes Long and family emigrated (along with the millions of others) to America in the late 1840s, but have never been able to document this. In any case, we do know it was sometime prior to August, 1852, when William Long was married in Cuyahoga County, Ohio to Alvira or Elvira Calhoun, born in Pennsylvania.
There is some speculation that the Long family was not originally from Co. Antrim, but rather that John settled there in order to find work.
Any help in fleshing this out would be most appreciated. Thanks for your time and attention to this.
Sincerely,
John Huebner

Hello Annemarie!
I am excited to receive your reply. My father and some cousins have done family research in the past, and all hit dead ends. I have been hopeful that there would be someone in or around Islandmagee who may have more information, and it seemed Ireland Reaching Out might help unlock some of those secrets. So, thanks so much.
[Before I go on, I see I should have proofread my original message a little more closely (please understand, this ancestry stuff is occasionally confounding to me). I believe It should read that my gr gr grandfather Wiliam Long may have had an uncle (meaning my gr gr gr grandfather John Long may have had a brother, most likely) also named William, who was married to Margaret Evans in 1839. I will be correcting that message as soon as I finish this one.]
(Further records show that a James Long of Mullaghboy married Elizabeth Huggin on 3 August 1838, with witnesses James and David Alexander. How that relates to this is unknown).
Based on what you've sent, then, it's possible that the Esther Long you mention, the daughter of Wm and Eliza Long, could be the niece of John Long....? If so, that's a great start on putting together this puzzle.
Thanks, Annemarie, and God bless.

Whoops, Annemarie--I just reread my message to you and I think I made too big a leap. The record you sent shows that the Wm Long in that record is married to Eliza Long; the William Long I believe may be John's brother was married to Margaret. That was in my original message--how I could have missed that is disappointing.
In any event, Annemarie, I will keep working on this and I am hopeful of unraveling this family mystery!

My cousin sent me a family book with information that may help you. I can't give you sources but the names may help.
John was born 1800 Isle Magee, Antrim, Ireland
He married Agness Hill before 1823
Their children were Robert (1823), James (1828), John (1831), William (1833), Thomas (1834), Margaret (1837), Ann (1841), Matilda (1843). All children were born in Ireland. The family came to Sheboygan, WI by way of Canada in 1843 or 1844.
John died in 1844 in a squall on Lake Ontario.
My family is from the son Robert.
No names or dates before 1800.
Sorry I don't have sources but maybe this will help.

Hi John, I have been researching my family roots on ancestry.com and a google search of who I believe to be my 3rd great-grandfather, William Henry Long, landed me on your post. I would be interested in discussing further with you and others on here, my email is cjgettelman@gmail.com.
