Hello

My GGG Grandfather was JOHN DAVISON who was born in County Antrim about 1780. We know he was farming in Ballymather, Killead in 1827 from the Tithe Records.

We know he married a MARGARET (Maiden name unknown) and she was in Liverpool, England in 1841 with a few of her children.

We know JOHN DAVISON died before 1847 as he was deceased when son JAMES DAVISON married in Liverpool, England.

I have found a Burial Record of a JOHN DAVISON who died on 24 January 1839 at Glenavy Parish Church (C of I). He was from Ballypitmave, Glenavy. This record was from RootsIreland and it does not give an age of this John Davison.

Does anyone know if an age for this John Davison would be available anywhere?

Regards

    Hi Pat,

Have you tried the National Archives in the UK  http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/immigrants.htm or the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/  ?  You may also try https://familysearch.org/  provided by the Church of Latter Day Saints as a free service.

As you may know Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870 are public records. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however many were destroyed in the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives.http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/. You could try writing to the local parish office for more assistance.

Do you know much about the family's emigration? Dates, the reason why they left, etc.? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool), this could be a good place to find more information which may lead to clues that are of interest to you.

I wish you the best of luck with your search.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

  • Hello

Thank you for replying to my message. My John Davison was born in 1780 and was living in Ballymather in 1827. We know that he had died before 1847 when son James Davison married Margaret Rankin in St Catherine's Church, Killead.

John Davison's wife and some of her children were living in Liverpool, England in 1841 which suggests that her husband John Davison had died before 1841.

The record I purchased from RootsIreland only tells me a John Davison of Glenavy died in 1839. I cannot tell by this if it is my John Davison.

I haven't tried the National Archives as I am in Australia.

I know John Davison is buried in Glenavy Church Yard where his son James Davison is buried.

I will try writing to the Church to see if they have the record there with his age on.

    Regards
