Not sure if I am going about this correctly and if not would appreciate any help.

I am trying to find out anything about my father David Alexander and my mother Elizabeth nee Hinds. I think they were both born around 1900 and married around 1920. They lived at 220 Queen Street in Ballymena from at least the 1940's until they died. My father died around 1953 and my mother died on Christmas Day 1963. My father was Catholic and my mother was Protestant. I'd like to know dates of birth, marriage etc. and of course any other information available.

My sincere thanks in advance.

  • Hi Hal

I searched www.rootsireland.ie/ (subscription site) for David Alexander birth /baptisms 1900 + - 10 years with surname variants and got 16 matches including David McAlister born 23 Dec 1893 in Ballymena Kirkinriola R C parish

Father is John McAlister mother Charlotte Fox

This was the only record from the Ballymena Kirkinriola parish.

I couldn't find a marriage record on rootsireland or on geni.nidirect.gov.uk (credit required)

geni.nidirect.gov.uk has 5 birth records of David Alexander 1900-1904 & 1 for Elizabeth Hinds in the same years. Perhaps you could purchase credit to have a look at those.

  • Looking at the possible deaths, the most likely seem to be Alexander Hinds who died 4.4.1954 aged 60 (so born c 1893/4 which fits the birth Col has found). Elizabeth died 25.12.1962 aged 62.

Date of their marriage was 26.3.1925 in Ballymena.

All these certs are viewable on the GRONI site for ?2 each.

This may be David in the 1911 census:

This might be Elizabeth in 1911, but can?t be certain:

I also found this probate abstract, which indicates David died intestate. The paper file should be held in PRONI, Belfast. It is not on-line.

Alexander, David of 220 Queen Street Ballymena county Antrim watchman died 4 April 1954 Administration Belfast 16 February to William Alexander dairy worker. Effects ?769 5s

    Likewise for Elizabeth:

Alexander, Elizabeth of 220 Queen Street Ballymena county Antrim widow died 25 December 1962 at Waveney Hospital Ballymena Administration Belfast 16 February to William Alexander dairy worker. Effects ?944.

  • Thank You, These are indeed my parents. My father was previously a photographer working for R.J. Dick's, the chemist on Bridge Street in Ballymena, I think until he lost all of his fingers on his right hand. After that he was a watchman. Now I know their marriage date and the date of their deaths. I was off by one year on my mother's death and I didn't know my fathers date at all.

Also William is/was (he died a few years ago) my older brother.

Again, thank you very much. I have tried in the past to get this type of information via the internet but I never had any luck.

I would like to find out more about my parents but to be honest I don't know what?

Can you tell me how you found the date of my parents marriage?

    My thanks again.

  • I found the marriage by searching GRONI?s marriage indexes. It gives you the surname of the person they married so it wasn?t too difficult to find. (GRONI has marriages in Northern Ireland on-line, up to 1939. I don?t think familysearch and some of the pay to view sites have anything after 1921, so GRONI is the only  place you?ll find it).
