Hello, I am trying to find any info on my Taylor Family. Daniel Taylor married Janet Hill. Children William born about 1826, Alexander abt. 1832, Jane (Jennie) abt. 1841, Daniel Jr. abt. 1844, Rachel abt. 1846, Margaret abt. 1849, Jane abt. 1851.

William married Eliz. Barnes Jan. 23, 1851, Ahoghill, Antrim.

All children born County Antrim. Daniel Sr., & Alex arrived in Canada before 1855, Janet (Hill) Taylor and children Jane, Daniel Jr., Rachel. Margaret, and Jane arrived 1858 aboard the ship Constellation, William and wife Eliz.(Barnes) Taylor and their children Robert John and Alexander James arrived 1856 aboard the Princeton.

In a family book it is wrote some of the children were born at Ballymena and I have a photo of Daniel Sr and Janet (Hill) Taylor taken at Ahoghill by John Fullerton Photographic Artist. Any info I find states only County Antrim so I am hoping I am searching in the right area.

Daniel Sr.  had two brothers that also came to Canada, Archibald and James Taylor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

          Thank you,

          Mary (Taylor) Lane

  • Mary,

You need to buy a copy of the actual marriage certificate to get the full information on it. You can order a photocopy from GRO Roscommon for 4 euros. http://www.groireland.ie/

Put ?Ballymena 1851 Volume 2, page 53? clearly on the application form (anywhere). That will enable them to find the certificate easily. Takes about 10 days. If you want it e-mailed to you, then write ?:please e-mail to ??? with your e-mail address, boldly somewhere on the form.

Tradition was to marry in the bride's church (which will be on the marriage certificate) so that'd be the place to look for her family. Only snag is, if they were Presbyterian, then none of the 3 Presbyterian churches in Ahoghill have records before the 1830s. However they may have been Church of Ireland in which case their records go a bit earlier.

  • Mary,

My great, great grandmother was Jane Taylor (youngest daughter of Daniel and Janet, married Robert Ferguson.)  Just checking in to see if you have found out any other information, or by chance I could get a copy of the picture you have.

    Best,

  • Since the 2013 post the 1851 marriage has been put on-line:

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1851/09402/5405706.pdf

Tradition was to marry in bride’s church which was 1st Ahoghill Presbyterian, so that’s possibly where she was baptised. However their records only go back to 1841 so there’s probably not going to be a record to find.

The groom lived in Tullygowan and the bride in Straid. Both are rural townlands a few miles from Ballymena. They are adjacent so William pretty well married the girl next door.  I looked in Griffiths Valuation (1862) and in the valuation revision records for any sign of Barnes in Straid but did not see them there up to 1879. However it looks as though the family were there all the same (perhaps staying with another family) as this looks to be Eliza Barnes’ father’s death in 1879 in Straid:

The modern Nursery Rd goes through the middle of both Tullygowan and Straid.
