    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Have you tried looking in local church records in Larne for information? Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Larne parish, follow this link: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showlikerecords&citycounty=antrim&CityCounty=Antrim&parish=Larne

For information on Church of Ireland records check http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.

www.familysearch.org have some Irish church records available in their database.

You could also check for record of the family in the land acts pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:

The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Some other websites that you may find helpful is:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

  • In your post, you said, "Robert John Whyte b 1834 Larne to James Whyte & Sarah Vernon.  Robert emigrated to Australia."

There are a number of White and Vernon family researchers online.  I have met some of them while researching a possible connection to my Curran family that resided in Kilwaughter.

Margaret White (1835-1900) was the daughter of James White and Sarah Vernon.  She married Henry Curran 17 Apr 1852 at the Old Larne Kilwaughter Presbyterian Church.  This couple immigrated to Australia in 1852, arriving in 1853.  Henry died 24 September 1884 in Lara, Victoria.  Margaret died in 1900 in Warrnambool, Victoria.

I am researching the possibility that Henry Curran was the brother of my Samuel Curran.  Here are some family connections:

John Curran and Eliza McBride, married abt. 1815, are believed to have had the following children:

    --Mary Curran, b. 1817 m. John Vernon 1834

--Henry Curran, b. 1830 m. Margaret White (her mother a Vernon)

--It is speculative, but possible, that my ancestor Samuel Curran, b. 1821, was a child of this couple.  Samuel married Sarah Brickley and immigrated to Hawkesbury, Ontario, Canada in about 1853.

The 1851 Census shows Elizabeth (Eliza McBride) Curran residing with her son, Henry and daughter, Mary Curran Vernon.  John Vernon is the spouse of Mary Vernon, but is mistakenly listed as brother-in-law instead of son-in-law.  The second census record is from neighboring Demesne Townland, where my Samuel Curran resided.  I believe the two areas are not geographically far from one another. Both border Kilwaughter Castle.

    MARGARET CURRAN /DAUGHTER/U//3/AT SCHOOL/ANT/
    THOMAS CURRAN /SON/U/5M//NONE/ANT/

These are the only Vernons (and there were no White/Whyte family members) listed in Kilwaughter Parish in 1851.  Henry Curran and Margaret White's marriage record indicated that both parties lived in Kilwaughter at the time of the marriage.  There are some Whites in Larne in that year.

I do not have any specific information on your Robert John White, but I'd be happy to put you in touch with other families who might be researching that White family.
