My family McMullen came to England 1841. The father was Patrick Joseph McMullen b. 1813 in Belfast, don't know mother's name. They were Catholics and had 4 children, William b. 2 March 1839, Patrick b. 1843, Sarah Ann b. 1836 and John Batholomew who was born on the boat on the way over in 1841. I have come to a full stop with my research as I can't find where they actually originated and who came before them.
Any help appreciated.

No luck on the early Irish Censuses or Tithe Applotments but the Foster Family Tree on ancestry (owner grandnana1212) has Patrick senior's father as John Patrick McMullen born 1783. Patrick had a brother Robert born 1815. It also has Patrick's wife as Sara Ann Walsh.

Hi Col
Would it be possible to go any further back with this one? I have a John Patrick McMullen b.1783 father of Patrick McM named above. Is there any way of confirming that he was Patrick's father and where did they come from?

Another question on the McMullen family. I've been trying to pin them down using other databases but the question I need answered is as they were in Belfast Co Antrim, what would be the area/village/township that they lived in?

Since November last year I have managed to track down a bit more information about the McMullen family I am seeking. I have found another child for Patrick McMullen and wife Sara Ann McMullen. She was called Mary b.1836 in Belfast. I haven't come across this name before so wondered if she died early but I can't find any further information on her. Also I have seen some records that mention they lived in Loughinisland, Down. Any information appreciated.

Hi Daisy
There are a few John McMullen baptisms around 1783 in Antrim but none is from Belfast.
For the village question have a look at the Tithe Applotments (free online) & PRONI Name Search (also free)

Hi Col - All the family seem to have had their baptisms, marriages at St Patrick's Belfast so I'm assuming he was born around that area. Some of the information on others in the family has been marked as Down & Connor diocise so they could have been outisde Belfast itself.
Thanks for the Tithe Applotments, I will have a search there.

Since my last posts I have found quite a bit more about the family but unfortunately not where they originated. I have found that John Bartholomew McMullen was born at sea in 1839 and that he married Teresa McGuigan in 1864 in Salford, Lancashire. The family seemed to go back and forth between Belfast and Manchester/Salford area as I have birth of John B McMullen in 1870 or 73 in Antrim and Sarah in 1872. The 2 earlier children William and Polly seem to have been born in Salford. I can also see a John McMullen born to these parents in 1874.
"Ireland Births and Baptisms, 1620-1881," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FPSY-PBT : 8 December 2014), Teresa Mcguiggan in entry for John Mcmullan, 07 Dec 1874; citing Belfast, Antrim, Ireland, index based upon data collected by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City; FHL microfilm 255,914.
I can't find census showing all these people together so wonder if there were two children John and Bartholomew?
I'd be grateful if anyone can throw any light on this family.
