I have hit a huge roadblock with regard to my G Grandmother and am hoping desperately that somebody may be able to assist me track down her details and story.

Her fathers name was Henry RYAN 1856-1887 (ULSTER IRELAND).  I believe he may have been a soldier.

Her mothers name was Amelia Vincent RYAN nee PALMER (DORSET, ENGLAND)

My G Grandmother used two different names:

Elizabeth Emily RYAN and Agnes Amelia RYAN (1872-1973).  She apparently was born in Ireland and met her husband William Arthur PARKIN in Cork, Ireland according to my mother (her granddaughter) who knew her as Agnes.

I can find no record of birth or Baptism in the name of Elizabeth or Agnes

I do have a copy a a wedding certificate showing that Agnes Amelia RYAN married  William Arthur PARKIN in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

with regard to the birth of her own children, who I personally met, Their Baptism certificates each reflect a different mother's name.  1. Lila (A derivative of Elizabeth?) 2. Agnes 3. Elizabeth 4. Havn't found this one yet

I have a copy of Elizabeth's Mothers will, in which she left a bequest to Elizabeth Emily, wife of William Arthur PARKIN

I also have copies of documentation showing that most of her siblings, were born in India.

If Elizabeth Emily/Agnes Amelia was born in 1872 as derived by her marriage certificate in the name of Agnes, then her parents would have been 16 and 15 respectively.

There are so many questions and I am desperate for help to untangle this situation.

Thank you for your interest and potential assistance.

I looked for this Amelia’s birth record on irishgenealogy.ie.  She was born in 1888, not 1891, on Barrack St. Her father was a staff sergeant.  See the following:

    Any relation to your Amelia?

  • Thank you kindly, unfortunately the Amelia you found is not the mother of Elizabeth Emily or Agnes Amelia RYAN

  • Sandy,

I organized your info as follows:

Henry RYAN 1856-1887 (ULSTER IRELAND).  I believe he may have been a soldier.

    m

Amelia Vincent RYAN nee PALMER (DORSET, ENGLAND)

        /

    --Some children born in India.

--Elizabeth Emily RYAN aka Agnes Amelia RYAN (1872-1973).  (She apparently was born in Ireland and met her husband William Arthur PARKIN in Cork.)

      m. in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

      William Arthur PARKIN

    Their children

           /

     1. Lila (A derivative of Elizabeth?)

    2. Agnes

    3. Elizabeth

    4. Havn't found this one yet

    Is this correct?

If you have any info about Agnes Amelia's siblings, perhaps you would provide it.  Names, approx years, birthplaces, etc.

Where did Agnes live when she was married to Parkin? Where did she die?

    Thanks.

Hi Patricia, I truly appreciate your help.  I have been struggling with this for several years now.

Elizabeth Emily RYAN / Agnes Amelia  Ryan

Birth: Circa 1872  I can find no birth or death documents under either name.

Marriage to William Arthur PARKIN AUGUST 7 1894 - Her age stated as being 22.  It is possible that she lied about her age.  I clearly recall my grandmother saying that her mother had married very young.

They married in the house of a M & E Bennett - 320 Victoria Road in Pietermaritzburg

He was a gunner in the Royal Artillary and then later joined the Cape Town Police service as a Constable. In one of the documents he lists his wifes name as Agnes.

I have included the death Notice of her mother, Ann Amelia Palmer VINCENT, in which all her children are named

My mother knew ELIZABETH as “Agnes”

SIBLINGS (From her mothers first marriage)

    Annie Amelia RYAN 1881-1882

    John Francis RYAN 1881 - ?

    William Cyrus RYAN - 1886 - 1914

    Edward William RYAN1886 - 1951

Katherine Anne Ryan - date unknown

    Thomas Henry RYAN ? - 1881

There. Is another anomaly here - some of the siblings appear to have been born in India with Henry RYAN being listed as their father but according to William Cyrus death notice, his father’s name was Timothy (doc included) - found this one today.

    CHILDREN

    Doris Ellen Magdaline PARKIN 1900-1960

    Edgar Charles Vincent PARKIN 1902-1902

Elsie Alfreda Parkin 1903-1961 (my grandmother)

Lila Florence Aldine PARKIN 1909 - ? (Unable to locate Baptism certificate)

All were born in the CapeTown area of South Africa.  With the exception of the child, Edgar, I met and remember them all.

    Thank you so much

    Sandy

  • About William Cyrus's father being called Timothy on the death cert and not Henry.  Information for a death cert is given by a third party, who may not have the correct information, maybe confused or grieving, etc.  Parents' names are sometimes incorrect on death certs.
