My grandfather William Greer born 1885 to James Greer and Margaret Henderson. William did not talk about Ireland very much to family in NZ.

The family were living at Residents of a house 49 in Doagh Town (Ballyclare, Antrim) in 1901 and Residents of a house 17 in Ballymartin (Templepatrick, Antrim) in 1911 would these two places be near each other, I get confused over the different names for the same area.

William lived in Carnanee with his family first wife Isabella Wilson 1892-1921 and second wife Maud Steele 1896-1974 before emmigrating to New Zealand.

William had a sister Catherine  1887 -   ? and brother James 1889 -1902. and a half sister Elizabeth 1872 - ?.

Would like to know if there are any living relatives of Catherine and Elizabeth still living.

James Greer was a widow when he married Margaret Henderson  have been unable to locate any information on who his first wife was.

Is there any descendant still living in the area.

Regards

Stella Greer Chestnut

  • Stella,

Ballymartin and Doagh are quite close together. Probably a mile apart. You can see where they are using the maps on Griffiths Valuation.

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

Today there’s a big park and ride car park in Ballymartin, where you can get the bus into Belfast, to save on city centre parking charges.

Probate abstract, from the PRONI wills site:

Administration of the Estate of James Greer late of Ballymartin Templepatrick County Antrim Farmer who died 30 November 1914 granted at Belfast to Margaret Greer the Widow.

James died intestate so there won’t be a will but the probate file should be in PRONI in paper format. They will send you a copy (for a small fee).

Possible marriage for Catherine Greer to Joseph Greer, in Belfast on 14th July 1914.

Births less than 100 years are not on-line, but are open to the public. However you either need to go into GRONI or ask them to search for you. So you could see whether Catherine and Joseph had any children. And you could then trace them forward. However there’s affair bit of work in that. You might need to employ a researcher.

I can’t identify the first marriage, or the birth of Eliza c 1872. There was a James Greer who married Janet Jamison in Newtownabbey on 29.8.1861. He was a farmer in Ballymartin when they had a daughter Eliza on 11.7.1871, plus at least 6 other children (Sarah, Robert, Mary, Margaret, Hannah & Martha).  However this seems to be him in 1901, so he can’t be your ancestor.

The name Greer is a very common surname in the Co Antrim area. Can be confusing.

  • Thanks for the info. I have some of the info you have mentioned. I will not be visiting Belfast for sometime unless I come into some money as it is expensive to get there from New Zealand. It is even more confusing if you do not have the right information to start with.

  • Hi,

James Greer (husband of Margaret Henderson) was the brother of my great-great grandfather Robert Greer. Their parents were James Greer and Sarah Laird Greer.  Robert emigrated to the US in about 1848. Robert and his wife Jane Courtney settled near the village of Augusta, Michigan, only a few miles from Kalamazoo, Michigan. Robert's brother John married Jane's sister Mary Ann. The two family's farms were just down the road from each other.

The children of James and Sarah (Laird) Greer were Andrew (1820-), Elizabeth (1821-1900) married William Black and emigrated to New York, John (1823-1888) married Mary Ann Courtney, Robert Greer (1825-1900) married Jane Courtney and emigrated to Michigan, Margaret Greer (b before 1832), Jane Greer (b before 1832), and Jame Greer (1833-1914) married Margaret Henderson.

  • Hi David

I have contact through DNA with Jeanette Maxey wife  William Maxey, whose Great Grandfather is Robert. So you and William would be cousins.

I have some information about the Greer's that went to America, would you know why they went.

I am slowly gathering information it is a bit hard and confusing as it is hard to find records and there are alot of Greer's and they have similar names in the same area.

If you would like to exchange information my email is stellachestnut35@gmail.com
