William Hayes

A birth in 1839 is well before the start of statutory birth registration in Ireland (1864) and so you would need to rely on church records for John’s baptism. Not all of those records have survived and of the ones that have survived, not all are on-line. Many of the Hayes families in the Templepatrick area were Presbyterian and not a lot of their records are on-line.

Do you know what denomination William was? Copies of the Presbyterian records for Templepatrick are in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. Have you checked those?

William was Presbyterian.  He emigrated to Canada in 1861. I have looked online at PRONI but not found any evidence of Hayes's in Templepatrick. 

The only other information I have been able to find is that he had a series of cousins in Belfast.  William James Hayes, 1847-1914, David Hayes, 1853-1918 (moved to Lancashire), Henry Cooke Hayes, 1857-1933, and Thomas Hayes 1860-1919, lived in Lisburn.    These families show up in the 1901 and 1911 Irish Census.   There are also photos taken in Belfast of a Hannah Hayes and a John Potts Hayes that I found in a family album.

You say that you looked at PRONI on-line and couldn’t find any record of William. That will be because (as I mentioned in my post of  20th September) the Presbyterian church records you probably need are not on-line. You need to go in person and look them up. (They are in microfilm format). You can see what church records PRONI holds and what years are covered from their on-line catalogue but a personal visit is required to view the actual records. PRONI has this probate abstract for Henry Cooke Hayes. Again the will itself is not on-line. PRONI should have it (in paper format).

Hayes Henry Cooke of 53 Willowbank Gardens Belfast retired seaman died 28 February 1933 Probate Belfast 23 May to Jane Hayes the widow and Isabella C. Hayes spinster. Effects £83 13s. 4d

William James Hayes died intestate, so there won’t be a will but his probate file should also be in PRONI:

Administration of the Estate of William James Hayes late of 55 Duncairn Gardens Belfast Chief Engineer who died 1 February 1914 granted at Belfast to David Hayes Chief Engineer

There should be a will for Thomas in PRONI:

Probate of the Will of the late Thomas Hayes, Elmside Villas, Lisburn, Co. Antrim, Engineer, who died 16 March 1919, granted at Belfast 30 May 1919 to William Charles Williamson, Iron Turner and Andrew Williamson, Fitter. Effects: £440 9s 2d.

Probably Thomas in the 1911 census, with his second wife Maria McKeown (nee Truesdale) whom he married on 11.1.1911 in Belfast:

Thomas Hayes married Esther McRoberts on 25.2.1891 in Belfast. His father was named John and was a warehouseman.

This looks to be William James Hayes wife and children in the 1911 census. (He was probably at sea and so not listed).

William James Hayes married Agnes Harrison on 25.11.1890 in Belfast. His father was John, a warehouseman. So he and Thomas were brothers.

Henry Cooke Hayes married Jane Clarke in Belfast on 31.10.1879. His father was John (clerk). So this links the 3 brothers nicely.

Hope this gets you a bit further forward.

There is one headstone in Ballylinney Old Graveyard to a William Hayes, and I think possibly his wife Ellen.  I think it is made of some form of concrete and unfortunately is very hard to read from my photograph.  I’d guess it is late 19th century, so too late for you, but they may be related.
