Sarah Jane Henritty nee Delaney (b1835 Ballymore) sailed to New Zealand in 1865 aboard the Dauntless. With her was her brother Peter Delaney (b 1845 Upper Killeavy) and her 4 yr old daughter Sarah Catherine (b 1861 Newry). Sarah Jane had married James Henritty in 1857 in Clonallan where he was possible born and they had 3 other children. John 1858 Newry, Mary Ann 1859 Newry and Hanna Teresa 1864 Newry. Hanna Teresa died the same year. Mary Ann ended up in America where she died in Portland Oregon supposedly a widow of David O'Neill. (No record found as yet of immigration or marriage). In her will she left money to her sister Sarah Catherine in New Zealand, but there is reference to a brother in Ireland.
To date I have not been able to find what happened to Sarah Jane's husband James or their son John, or anything else about James Henritty/Henratty. There are some records indicating James may have had a shop in Newry. Presumably he died sometime between fathering Hanna Teresa and the boat sailing or did Sarah Jane abandon him and her other children?
Sarah Jane did remarry in a Catholic Church in New Zealand in 1867 calling herself a widow, and had another 6 children. She later abandoned her second husband and 2 sons in New Zealand. He subsequently died and they were placed in an orphanage,
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you

I think the surname was Hanratty. Civil registration started in 1864 and I did find the civil birth index record for Hanna Teresa. You can write to the GRO www.groireland.ie for a copy of the birth record
I also found a death index record for James Hanratty in 1864 in the Newry district which possibly could be your relative. (see 2nd record below). Again you can write to the GRO for a copy of the record. Fill out their form provide the year of death, registration district, and the volume and page number ( 1 and 645). Costs around 4 euros.

Hi Roger,
Thank you so much for your reply. I think the death record could be one of my missing links.
I followed the link you posted above and to order a certificate online costs abot 20 euros. This seems a bit steep to me, is this right as you mentioned 4 euros? I am a bit hamstrung to visit, as I live in New Zealand.

Jane:
You don't need a certificate. You only need a copy which is around 4 euros. Also, unless the process has changed you can only order online for later records. An 1864 record request will have to be sent by mail. Provide a credit card number and ask for a copy. I live in the USA and I have mailed to the GRO many times. Usually takes 10-14 days. Of course, probably a little longer to New Zealand. Let me know if you have more questions.

Hi Marnie,
Great to hear from you. Since posting my original message 6 years ago I have found quite a bit more information about Sarah, including about her first husband's death. I too live in New Zealand!
It is my husband who is related to her, but me that does the research.Sarah Jane Delaney is also his 2x gt grandmother. You perhaps already know she married twice. Are you related on the Hanratty or Walter side? Where do you live?
If you would like to contact me directly my email is janebnz13 at gmail dot com
