We have been researching the O’Hagan (Egan) family who originate from Blackwatertown in Armagh.
Three siblings – Arthur, Francis and Mary – migrated to Australia on the ship “Broom”, arriving on 13 Feb 1842. Francis Arthur Egan is my 2x great grandfather. He was 19 years old when he arrived in NSW (he was know as Egan).
Research suggests Francis was born in 1822 and was baptised in Belfast (?).
In NSW, Francis married Mary Murphy (whose father came from Waterford) on 19 Feb 1849. Francis died on 9 Nov 1879 at the age of 57 years.
What became of Arthur and Mary is not known.
The ship’s record on Francis’s brother Arthur state the following:
They were brought out by Mr F Reid. Calling – Farm labourer (no employers)
Person certifying baptism – Rev. F Kierney or Kenny (parish priest in Belfast)
Character and person certifying the same: William Stewart and Edward Flannagan (Belfast)
State of health very good certified by Dr William Hale (Belfast)
(This record done in Ireland in 1841?)
Family information suggests Francis’s parents were John O’Hagan and Rose McSherry.
I’m interested in any information about the O’Hagan and McSherry families and whether they stayed in the area.
Michael.

Michael:
The 1864 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Clonfeacle parish shows seven Hagan entries but no John. (There were no O'Hagan or McSherry entries). I also looked at the 1901 census and there were some Hagans in the area including this family which includes a James who was about the age of Francis. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Armagh/Charlemont/Lislasley/1012166/
You can use www.nationalarchives.ie to search. The DED is Charlemont.
