Researching my Hammill and Donnelly family that emigrated to Philadelphia, PA via NYC about 1871. Hoping to connect with any family still living in the area.

James Hammill, married Sarah Donnelly, 02 May 1843, Clonfeacle Parish, County Tyrone, Ireland. Witness was James Cumberland.

I found James Hammill in the 1851 Griffith's Valuation in Strangmore (Knox), Clonfeacle Parish, Ord. S-54. A John Donnelly on the next plot of land.

James Hammill was born 1824, Ireland, died 01 Jul 1887, Phila., PA
Sarah Donnelly Hamill born 1823, died 08 Jul 1873, Phila., PA

All of their children were born in Ireland: Clonfeacle Parish, County Tyrone, Ireland.

They were as follows:

Edward Hammill born 27 Oct 1847, died 07 Jun 1883 in Philadelphia (married Catherine Tole in Philadelphia)

Sarah Hammill born 24 Sep 1854, died 03 Nov 1876 in Philadelphia

Catherine Hammill McKenna born 1853, died 05 Oct 1911 Philadelphia (married James McKenna in Philadelphia)

Catherine Hammill married James McKenna 25 Feb 1873 at St Michael's Catholic Church 1425 N. 2nd St., Phila., PA

James Hammill, Jr., born 10/24/1860, died 12/15/1911 Philadelphia (married Kate Hammill. Not sure about her maiden name, yet!)

Mary Ann "Annie" Hammill born 02 Aug 1857,  died 07 Jul 1891 in Philadelphia (married Lewis Fleck in Philadelphia)

All are buried in New Cathedral Cemetery, Phila, PA, 2nd & Butler Street, Phila., PA in Section K, Range 3, Lot 10, except James Hammill, Jr., who is buried in Old Cathedral Cemetery, 48th & Lancaster Ave., Phila., PA.

  • Hi Joe, Don't know if I can help you.   Clonfeacle was/is part of Eglish Parish.  I purchased this wonderful historical book called the Book of Eglish.  In it is an entire chapter devoted to one Hammill family.  There is much historical info in the book and many, many names though not in genealogical format.   I descend from the Carbery/Donnelly families of Eglish/Clonfeacle so I've been doing quite a bit of searching.   These families, including the Hammills and Hughes, etc. are all connected.  It's a very small parish.  Now, my Carbery ancestor (and wife Catherine Donnelly) came over to Quebec, Canada in the early 1840s.  If you want more info re the book, etc., you can email me at dancingmaples@hotmail.com.  Might also say I did connect with my Carberys over there and I have had some contact with an Hammill descendent - she wrote the chapter in the book.   She might be able to help you.   Anyway, let me know and email me.
