Hugh Knox married Margaret Watt C1844 in an Anlican Church in Clonfeacle.  Hugh and Margaret were assissted immigrants to Australia, arriving on the "Simmonds" in 1855 in Sydney.

Hugh Knox was born in c1816 to Joseph Knox and Ann Jane (nee Armstrong) in Co. Armagh Ireland

Margaret Watt was born c1824 in Co Armagh Ireland, (possibly from Shankill, Barony of onelland East.

Would like to find a record of their marriage, possibly in the St patricks Church at Benburb?

  • I think the marriage may have taken place in 1854. There appears to be a marriage registered in Dungannon for 1854 Vol 5, page 438, between Hugh Knox and Margaret Watt. Dungannon is the civil registration area that includes Benburb.

You can order a photocopy from GRO Roscommon for ?4 per certificate. Put the place, year, quarter (where there is one), volume & page number on the application form (anywhere). http://www.groireland.ie/ You have to post or fax the form to them but they will e-mail the copy certificate to you if you wish. Put ?please e-mail to?..? clearly on the top of the form.

Tradition was to marry in the bride?s church (assuming the couple attended different churches) so that may be the place to look for the bride?s baptism and that of any siblings. Unless it was a registry office marriage, the church will be on the certificate.

If you look at the website www.familysearch.org there is a marriage between a Hugh Knox and Margaret Watt and the date given is 30th November 1854 [although this seems to be later than you thought the names and area are identical - also Hugh's father is named as being Joseph].

I believe you're correct in your thinking about which Church it would be - this particular Church does have the records in their custody so you could try the Minister.

Hopefully this will get you started.

  • The names Watt and Knox collided in the townland of Ballycullen/Shanmullagh in the Armagh part of Clonfeacle. I have information about those families if it turns out to be relevant. Please report back when you get those marriage details.
