Hello

Any info on Finnegan's from Drumnahuncheon.  Apparently they owned four farms and stone pits.  My great grandfather was George Finnegan who lived in Ballytrue.  His father was Peter Finnegan as was his grandfather.

I have a death certificate fro George.

Thank you

Sam

  • Hi Sam

I couldn't ffind a biath/baptism record of George with father Peter but this one is from Drumnahuncheon:

There are 6 Peter Finnigans with father Peter; none is from Drumnahuncheon I'm afraid.

Do you have a mother's name or birth years?

  • Hello

    Thanks for your response.  I am a bit in the dark about this side of the family, therefore jsut adding bits and pieces together.  I cannot say George Finnegan was from Drumnahuncheon, I just know his cousins were residing there and land and a stone quarry were left in one of their wills so assummed that is where George orginanted from.  I have the following info;

George Finnegan is listed in the 1901 cences , Ballytrue, Kilmore, states born in Armagh , age 65 years, born 1836 -1903

From message boards on Ancestry it appears he had a brother called Peter. Peter hada a daughter called Annie

I believe Peter and George's father was called Peter. Peter's brother was called George who married Jane (Bella)

George and Jane had children, Peter, Francis, John, James, George, Sarah and Ann

George and his unmarried sister are in the 1901 cences living with George's wife Matilda, and their nephew Thomas Murphy, son of Sarah Finnegan.

    Yes all very confusing...............

  • Hi Samantha

There are a few George Finnigan (+ surname variants) around 1836 in other counties but none has father Peter

    I tried to find brothers George & Peter 1836 1836 + - 10 years but no luck

I checked the 1901 Census you mentioned and George was 76 in 1901 so born c1825 but still couldn't find him!!

  • Thanks for you response.  Can I ask, what site do you go on yourself to seek info?  If i were to try a different angle at this, ie his cousin, also named George married a Matilda, they are also in the 1901 cences in Armagh, no children, just a nephew staying with them at the time, Thomas Murphy.....where would I start?  This way I could ascertain cousin George's father's name..........

    Regards

  • Hi Sam

Good thinking! The site is www.rootsireland.ie/ which requires a subscription but I think they have short term options too.

    So a 76 year-old was married to a 35 year-old?

So this George is a cousin of the 65 year old who is listed alone in the census - I mixed them up.

  • Brilliant thank you. Yes the age difference is very well...different but my parents advised this happened quite a bit...sometimes a bit like an arranged marriage I guess. Just to confirm, George who married Matilda, his dad was George as well? Also does it stare George's mother's name?

    Regards

  • Yes father definitely Georeg; mother's name not given. The records don't cut & paste well.

Assuming George jnr was born c 1870 I searched & this is the only record for any George with father George 1870 + - 10 years:

    Name:George FiniganDate of Birth:15-Feb-1880
    Registration Date:05-Mar-1880Address:DrumnahuncheonParish/District:RICHHILLGender:MaleCountyARMAGH
    Denomination:Civil Parish / District
    Father:George FiniganMother:Jane McKewOccupation:Farmer

    Informant 1:Jane Finigan

Everything fits except the age - 14 is a bit young to be married I assume. Could one of the years (1880 or 1894 be a transcription error?
