Looking for Singleton Gardiner and his wife margaret nee Livingstone, who lived in the area of Rich Hill. My descendant is their son, Thomas born.about 1806, moved to England and then to Australia.  Singleton's children emigrated around the world. looking for extended family members of Singleton and the descendants of margaret, his wife (if the data is correct from ancestry, that this is his wife) who stayed in Ireland.

  • Dear Barbiefay

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Unfortunately, this is probably as far back as you will be able to research given the early time frame. Church of Ireland records for Kilmore do not begin until 1843, so you will not be able to get a parish record, if indeed they were baptised and married here. Records up to this point are available on rootsireland.ie - St. Saviour's Church of Ireland are just newly added.

I think the best course of action would be to track the children and other extended family in the hope that they provide you with the information you need. Rootsireland and ancestry are available and family search too, the latter which is free to access.

For names too that are a little uncommon, I sometimes conduct a search of the Irish Newspaper Archive as you can see straight away if the news item is relevant. You can subscribe for short periods if that suits and I believe their Christmas offer is still in operation:

  • My ancestor is also a descendant of this Singleton Gardiner - mine is his son Singleton 1823-1907 - married Anne Jane Proctor b 1824 of Carlow, Carlow, Ireland.    This Singleton died/buried in Lurgan.

They had one daughter - Matilda Gardner (the" i"  is dropped) - my great grandmother - she married Thomas Holland a widower in Kilmore Parish, in 1858.  They had several children, including my grandmother Lucinda b 1872 - immigrated to the US in 1890.  There is a son (though Thomas' name is mistranscribed as Francis) - George Holland b 1868  he marries a Ruth M'Alister and by the 1911 census they have 7 children.  There is also a sister Susannah b 1864..?  and a sister Matilda b 1869 d 1872.   I'd like to find more on Thomas Holland - AND on George Holland and his descendants.  In 1901 and 1911 he and his family live in house 5 Turcarra (Hockley, Armagh)...

Any guidance is welcome.  I am planning to be in Armagh, Richill and other areas in August of this year.  It would be most exciting to meet "relatives' no matter how distant.  I am planning a  one month subscription to Find my past and ??  Thank you, Molly Shannon

  • Thomas Holland died 12.5.1879 aged 68, at Turcarra. His wife Matilda was the informant.

George died in 1914. Porbate abstract, from the PRONI wills site:

Probate of the Will of George Holland late of Turcarry County Armagh Farmer who died 3 December 1914 granted at Armagh to Samuel Taylor and George Bates Farmers.

The will itself is not on-line but should be in PRONI in paper format.

Griffiths Valuation for 1864 lists Thomas Holland in Turcarra. He had plot 9 which was a 14 acre farm. Nearby on plot 12 was James Holland another farmer. Possibly a relation. Thomas’s farm today looks to be on the Drumilly Rd.

Jacob, George & Thomas Holland all signed the Ulster Covenant together in Loughgall in 1912. You can see their signatures on the Covenant Website, and it tells you about their political views on Home Rule. https://apps.proni.gov.uk/ulstercovenant/
