Alan Cuningham (1 N) was born in County Armagh in 1738 attended Trinity University and had a wife and two children. By 1765 the wife and children were deceased and Alan moved to New London PA and remarried, opened a on and fought as a captain in the PA Militia at Brandywine.
I am looking for a birthplace.
I am assuming he would have been at Trinity about 1756-1760 or so. I have no records from Ireland other than his obituary  any help greatly appreciated

  • Research in Ireland in the 1700s is notoriously difficult due to a general lack of records.  Hardly any churches or other institutions have records for that period.  Your best bet may be to ask Trinity what records they have of Alan’s attendance there.

I’d be flexible about the spelling of the surname. It might be Conyngham as well as Cun etc. The idea of a single “correct” spelling was not something that troubled folk in Ireland in the 1700s and it varied all the time.

  • Thank you for the assistance. I am positive on the spelling on the gravestone but it may have been a bit different in Ireland. Alan was a man of some education and substance (Presbyterian) and I'm hopeful Trinity might be able to help.
    Thanks!
