McTameny/Macatomony/McEtamany Family

Just for information, Lurgan isn’t a county. It is a town in Co Armagh. I think your family may have lived in the parish of Seagoe. I found the baptism of Henry McTameny on 4th Oct 1838 to Eugene and Eliza Hennan (sponsors Arthur Hennan & Sarah McTameny) & that of Catherine McTameny to same parents on  8th Feb 1842 (sponsors Hugh Hennan & Mary Walsh).

I didn’t see Sarah Ann nor William’s baptisms but you might want to go through the registers to see if they are there but with a spelling that the search engine hasn’t picked up.  http://www.nli.ie

Seagoe RC parish records start in 1836. There is a gap in the baptisms of 3 months in 1837 which might account for not finding Sarah Ann. And if the parents married in that parish before 1836, there is no record to find.

Death registration only started in Ireland in 1864, so if Eugene & Elizabeth died before that there’s probably no record to find. I did see the death of Elizabeth McAtamney on 11.8.1864 aged 50, registered in Lurgan. You have to pay to view that record. I don’t know if it’s your family, merely that it’s the only one I can see in the Lurgan area 1864 – 1900. You can view the original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate. 

The 1857 marriage is helpful because it gives the McAtamney address as Aughacommon and McAlendon as Tannaghmore.

The tithe applotment records for 1834 show families of those names farming in those townlands:

Griffiths Valuation for 1864 lists Eugene McAtamney in Aghacommon. He had plot 14 which was a 5 acre farm. (The site today is down a dead end lane off the Aghacommon Embankment). Sarah McAtamney farmed next door on plot 15 and was presumably relate din some way. There was a Luke Hennan  on plot  19.

Sarah McAtamney was a widow who die din 1880 aged 61:

The Valuation records show Eugene’s name against plot 14 till 1882 when he was succeeded by Catherine McStravick. Sarah was succeeded by Felix McAtamney. Felix in 1911:

Felix McAtameny married Catherine McAtamney in 1878. Her father was Eugene, so she looks to be Sarah Ann’s sister. Plus the certificate confirms Eugene was alive in 1878. Witnesses look to be Henry and Elizabeth McAtamney.

The marriage looks to have been in St Peter’s in Lurgan. So presumably that was the family church.

Have been without the internet for some time and just found your most welcome response to my query regarding Sally Ann/Sarah Ann McAtemeny (various spellings).  Have found numerous children born to Eugene and Betty, but no mention of Sally Ann/Sarah Ann.  However, your explanation of a gap in the baptisms in 1837 may explain why.
