I am looking for information on a relative by the name of Samuel Allen.  I believe he was born in 1820.I found a person by this name that was from/born in the townland Tannaghmore North.  He later left Ireland to Ontario, Canada.   Thank you for any help!

  • You might find Samuel’s baptism. You don’t say what denomination he was. The RC records for the parish start in 1822 (which may just be too late),  but the Presbyterian (Lurgan 1st Pres church) start in 1746 and the Church of Ireland in 1681. The RC records are on-line on the NLI site.  I am not sure if the others are on-line but there is a copy of both in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. A personal visit there is required to view them.

There was a Bernard Allen farming in Tannaghmore North in 1833, according to the tithes. Allen is a common enough name and there may not be any connection:

I know you say your Samuel left Ireland for Canada. However Griffiths Valuation for 1864 lists a Samuel Allen on plot 9 in Tannaghmore North which was a total of just over 4 acres. So subsistence farming. A relative perhaps? That farm’s on the modern Tannaghmore Rd North, in Lurgan. Looking at Google Earth there looks to be some sort of factory there now. The Valuation Revision records show Samuel Allen’s name against the property till 1898 when it changes to “Reps of Samuel Allen”, indicating he had died. By 1901 the tenant was Henry McCorry.

Statutory death records show that Samuel Allen died 10.11.1897 at Tannaghmore North. He was a widower, aged 70, and a farmer. His son John was the informant, and lived in the same townland.

This may be the son in the 1901 census:

I note he was Church of Ireland.

  • Thank you for all the responses to my search.  I did some research and found out that Samuel Allen was born in 1814 not 1820. I was able to find Samuel Allen's marriage information in Canada.  I also found his cemetary records showing his headstone, which gave his birthdate along with his wife's information.  He was married in 1838 after he left Ireland.  I hope to find out more about his parents and their information.
