Good morning and hello ~ My name is Jeanne, and I'm a new member to Ireland Reaching Out. After many years of research I finally have the one and only clue that allows me to begin looking for my roots in Ireland. By great good fortune--and a wonderful database of newspapers here in New York-- I found my great great grandmother's obituary, dated February 1892. Her name was Ellen Quinn and it states that she was born "County Carlow, Tullow St., Ireland." With the date of death I was able to obtain her Death Certificate which puts her date of birth at about 1832. I've tried to find the name of the parish where Tullow St. is located but without any results, and I guess that's the first piece of the puzzle I'll need to begin research.
Thank you!
Jeanne

My apologies for the multiple replies. I got repeated messages that my word verification was incorrect and to try again. So I did, and then they ALL worked at once.

Hi Jeanne, I am a new researcher but this is my area. I live in Carlow town and Tullow Street is what you might call the 'Main drag'. In some documents it is referred to as Yellow street but it is a mistake. The parish is Carlow town and the roman Catholic church that covers this area is St. Mary's Cathedral which is in College Street just off of Tullow Street. hope this helps.......................Graiguegirl

Hello Sarah ~ Thanks for writing. I've discovered quite a bit since my original post but mostly about the Gormans and McDarbys, not the Quinns. My 2nd great grandmother Ellen Quinn, the subject of my first query, married Peter Gorman about 1847. He was the son of Joseph Gorman and Mary McDarby. I've located 2 baptisms in Carlow that could be Ellen's. One is more likely the right one since it's closer to Tullow St. but I have no way of knowing for sure. The names of the parents are James Quinn on both and Mary ? on one, Mary Logan on the other. Does any of that ring a bell? I finally found my Walshes in Cork after 40 years of searching so I'm hopeful I'll get past this brick wall too.
Best, Jeanne
