I have found several entries in the online RC Parish Registers for Clonmore for members of my family, the Doyle family.

I have found an Extract from Census Return of 1851 naming Catherine Fenlon nee Doyle, with my Great, Great, Great Grandparents recorded as her parents and living in Boley. She is therefore the sister of my Great, Great Grandfather! At the time of her applying for her State Pension,1916, her address is given as Coolkenno, Tullow. I am unable to find any birth entry for her in the online Clonmore Parish records. Any ideas of where else I may look for this, or indeed her marriage or death records? To add to my confusion the 1916 form states Residence in 1851: County: Wicklow, Barony : Shillelagh, Parish: Aghowle, Townland: Boley. Any help, or pointers would be gratefully received.

With the family being based in Boley, Clonmore Parish, can anyone advise me of possible places of burial? I am hoping that Kilquiggin is a likelihood.

Very many thanks.

John Doyle

  • Hi John

What is Catherine's date / year of birth?

There are 26 Catherine Doyle birth/baptism records on www.rootsireland.ie/ from Clonmore, Wicklow 1821 to 1889.

  • Hi there Col,

Very many thanks for taking the time to post.

I do not have an accurate year of birth for Catherine Doyle. I have a copy of the form entitled EXTRACT FROM CENSUS RETURN OF 1851 which constituted proof of age for her to claim her old age pension. They received her application on the 5th July 1916, and a copy of the form (as stated above) was despatched to her on the 8th August 1916.  Perhaps this indicates that a record of her birth did not exist, or perhaps it was that Catherine was unable to find or obtain a copy at the time (presumably her parents were dead by then, perhaps she was baptised in another parish, and obviously by then she was unable to ask them!! Perhaps one of those listed you have found is her. According to The National Archives of Ireland people were eligible for a pension, implemented in January 1909 and had to be seventy years old. Catherine applied in 1916 so am assuming that she reached seventy then. Had she been older, or much older, I am presuming that she would have applied as early as 1909, but she did not until 1916. This gives her year of birth as 1846, which is contemporary with the baptisms of her siblings that I can find!!

    Very many thanks Col.

  • John,
I have Gahan ancestors from Boley and the adjacent townland of Monaghullen. I have found some BMD records in the Clonegal registers.
My ancestors are buried in the old church at Aghowle. The grave yard is covered by the Cantwell memorials. If ever in Dublin a visit to the reading rooms of the NLI to look at document MS6082 may be of use. This document is a mini census taken on Fitzwilliam land from 1827 to 1868. There are also colour maps of the townlands with lists of leaseholders from the 1840's. I don't remember the number of that ledger though. There was a Judith Doyle age 50 living in Monaghullen in 1827.
    Cheers
