I am seeking information on my grandmother's family. My Grandmother was Elizabeth Mary Nolan b. 12 Dec 1909 in Bagenalstown to James Nolan and Mary McGrath. Her older siblings were Margaret b. 1905, Patrick b. 1906 and Michael b. 1908. James died in Nov 1909 a month before my grandmother was born. James was born about 1875 to Jams Nolan and Mary Ward. Mary McGrath was born about 1883 to Patrick McGrath and Eliza King. My grandmother told me that some of the family was from Leighlinbridge. My grandmother grew up on Philip St. Upper Kilree in Bagenalstown if that helps at all.

My Grandmother immigrated to the United States in 1930 as did her brother Patrick a year or so before her. Any help you can give me on the family would be greatly appreciated. I have been told that Mary McGrath went on to have 3 more children. I am not sure if she was married or not to their father.

Thank you, BarbaraJo Caisse nee O'Connor Coventry, CT, USA

  • Barbarajo:

Here is the 1911 census record for Mary and her children. They lived in Kilcarrig townland in Dunleckny civil parish. The oldest daughter was shown as Mary instead of Margaret.

I also located two marriage records. The first is the civil marriage record for Patrick McGrath and Eliza King. The second is the 1904 marriage index record for James Nolan and Maria McGrath.

If you get a copy of the 1879 marriage record, it will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living in 1879. A copy costs around 4 euros from the General Register Office. If you are interested in a copy let me know and I will forward instructions.

  • Thank you very much Roger. Yes I would like to get a copy of both of those marriage registers if that is possible. Can you show me where to send a certified check to. I am also interested in getting a copy of my great grandfather James's death record. I was told he was buried in Dunleckney cemetery but that it may be an unmarked grave. Would the parish have a burial record anyway?

    Thank you,
    Barbara Jo

  • Barbara Jo:

Go to the link below. Print out the marriage or death form as appropriate. Fill out the forms to the best of your ability ( one form per copy). Include the info from the index record: quarter/year of the event, registration district and volume and page number. Make sure you ask for a copy. I provide my credit card number and I have never had an issue. You have to mail the form to GRO in Co. Roscommon ( address is provided with the form printout). You can ask GRO to e-mail the copies back to you. It usually takes two weeks and I live in Maryland.

I also included the civil death index record.

Let me know if you have more questions.
