I am looking for information on the Whyte family.  From Fonthill Milford or Ballinabranagh . My grandfather was a school teacher in this area. There were 9? Children ,one of whom was my father Thomas. The other children were Richard, Joseph, James, Patricia, Mary, Aloysious, Paddy and Kathleen (married name Brophy) . My Grandparents (who, sadly I never met,) were Richard Fintan Whyte and Kate or Catherine. I notice that they are still remembered on their anniversaries in the parish newsletter. My aunt was Str M Mercedes who was matron at the seminary at Wexford when I met her in the 80's. We were separated as a family as my branch travelled the world.  I would be very grateful for any information you can provide.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The family lived in Ballinabranagh townland in Cloydagh civil parish. See census records below.

Richard was actually married twice. He married Mary Keeffe in 1893 and Kate Hayden in 1904. See links below. You will have to sign-in to see the records. Mary died in 1903 from cariac degeneration

I don't see Thomas or Aloysius in the census records. Were they in a boarding school?

  • Thank you Roger, I was delighted with the information. Especially as I now have 2 names for Great Grandfathers. Thomas (my father) was born April 1911 so will have missed the census. I notice that  2 children do not appear on the 2nd census. Could they have died? I know that my father's father Richard died and the family were split up (to an aunts). Sadly I have very sketchy information from far ago conversations.

I see my Great Grandfather David Whyte was a school teacher from Kerry. I do not have a parish. Could you advise how I could try to trace the family.

Once again thank you for your prompt and interesting reply.

The 1911 census only shows info on the second wife and how many children she had and were living ( 3 and 3). We don't know how many children he had with Mary Keeffe (6?) and were living. You could search for death records at www.irishgenealogy.ie

Why do you think David Whyte was from Kerry?

  • On the full census read out, Richard Whyte's place of birth is listed as Kerry. My father used to say his father was from the west. On looking at 1901 census again I can see that Josephina and her brother would have been 17 and 15 and could probably have left home. I can't find a record of them in 1911. I will check other records as you suggest.

    Best wishes,    Frankie
