My name is Glen Brown and i am trying to dig up information on my ancestors who came to Australia from Oldleighlin Co. Carlow in the mid 1800's
Tithe Allotment Books 1823-1827
TOWNLAND PARISH COUNTY YEAR
Madden Morgan Old Leighlin Oldleighlin Carlow 1824
Morgan Madden was transported as a convict ,sailed from Dublin 28/4/1840 arrived 17.8.1840 on the "King William"(SR Ref 4/4414 Film 1026).Offence "Burglary and Felony".Sentence "Transportation 10 years".Trial Date 9/3/1840 Co. Carlow Document ref TR 3 Page 13. A petition was made(Document reference 1840 m 27) "Convict was convicted with his son in law for the same offence.States he has a wife and large family." (Elizabeth, John's mother was probably the only daughter married in Ireland unless Morgan had daughters who did not come out to Australia. This may be an explanation of why Elizabeth came out alone with John) Offence on petition shown as robbery.Given Ticket of Leave 1845(TL 45/1935) and Certificate of Freedom 23.8.1850(CF No. 50/0236)Prisoner No.40/1535 .Ticket of Leave states "Allowed to Remain in the District of Moreton Bay".Age on trial record shown as 30 but on petition recorded as 60 Based on age of children neither is likely to be correct. There is no record of Morgan's son in law coming to Australia.
Morgan died 1870.Fathers name on death record John.Mothers name not on death record.Convict Indent 74 shows offence was stealing money,married,1 son & 3 daughters ,age 47,both read & write, farm labourer,5'7.5"tall,ruddy complexion, brown hair, hazel grey eyesMorgan MADDEN B 1793, Carlow .Per King William 1840 Transportation 10 yrs.Convict was convicted with his son in law for the same offence. States he has a wife and large family.Morgan was sent to Moreton Bay(present day Brisbane) and received Certificate of Freedom in 1850.
In July 1850, Morgan applied for his wife Mary (nee DELANEY)aged 53 and hischildren Thomas (aged 23),Mary (aged 28) and Ellen (aged 22) to come to NSW,from Old Leighlin, Carlow. 3 Children came on the "Garland" in 1850.Unable to locate any record of wife Mary coming to Australia.Shipping records show:-
Mary 08 C 1823 Old Loughlin,Carlow Parents:Morgan/Mary Garland 1851 age28 . Father at Richmond,NSW.
Ellen 05 C 1829 Old Loughlin,Carlow Parents:Morgan/Mary Garland 1851 age22 . Father at Richmond,NSW.
Thomas 11 C 1826 Old Loughlin,Carlow Parents:Morgan/Mary Garland 1851 age25 . Father at Richmond,NSW.
Other daughter Elizabeth Brown came out in 1856 on the Commodore Perry with her son John.
Shipping records for Elizabeth show:-
she could both read and write.age 35.Occupation in Ireland was Farm Servant. It is interesting that her parents are shown as "William/Mary Both Dead" but no mention of John or her husband Wiiliam
Shipping records for John show:
On the ship's records (Commodore Perry 1856)Johns parents are listed as "William /Elizabeth bothdead",although his mother,Elizabeth, was on the same ship. Also his birthplace is shown as Paulstown,Cavan. The shipping records also show that he has a brother,Thomas, and sisters,Mary and Ellen, living at Richmond River. In fact Thomas,Mary and Ellen were brother and sisters of John's mother and had come out in 1851 on the "Garland" to join their father,Morgan Madden, who had been transported as a convict in 1840 on the "King William"(some of the inaccuracies may have been deliberate to disguise the relationship to Morgan Madden).John's age is recorded as 14 in 1856(shipping records),
Elizabeth is mentioned( as Elizabeth Madden) in the Griffith Valuations:
