Edward, Thomas, and Patrick Mullen arrived in Philadelphia on 02 Jul 1816, on the Ceres after departing Dublin.  Edward was born in about 1800; he settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania, not far from Philadelphia.  The three arrivals were from County Carlow, but it is unclear how (if at all) they were related to one another.  I have been unable to find any further record of Thomas or Patrick.  Edward's granddaughter Sarah Jane (1845) had a strong Irish lilt right up to her death in 1936; she raised my father and imparted in him a dry sense of humor like that which I've enjoyed among expats and current residents of Ireland.  Despite past travel to Ireland and hundreds of hours of online research, I've been unable to find out anything more about my 3x great grandfather Edward Mullen; health and money issues make it unlikely that I'll be able to return to Ireland (even though I dream about that constantly).  Would be most grateful if anyone can help me find out more about my Mullen relatives, past and present, in County Carlow.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I assume your ancestors were Roman Catholic. I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland but I did not locate a baptismal record around 1800 or earlier for an Edward Mullen. Likely, the church where the baptism occurred no longer has records back to 1800.

I know you indicated that money is an issue but DNA testing might provide some matches to individuals who also have Mullen connections and have more info on the origins of the family in Ireland. The major testing companies have periodic sales around holidays such as Mother's Day.

  • Thank you for your quick response and for checking baptismal records, Roger.  I did have autosomal DNA testing thru Ancestry.com, then posted the raw data to www.gedmatch.com, familytreedna.com, and myheritage.com.  Y-DNA testing isn't any help, since I'm not in contact with any Mullens in the direct male line.

  • Dear George:

Thank you for your post and your information supplied.  We do have a few volunteers in the County Carlow area and I will pass this query to them.  In addition, you might try to contact the Carlow Historical Society website.  There may be information there that can assist you with your research on the Mullen family.  Their link is:  https://carlowhistorical.com/  If you have any further questions, please let me know.

Please also consider creating an Ancestor profile about one of the Mullens family on our XO Chronicles feature.  These profiles are often very helpful to others who are also researching the same families.

    Kind regards,

    Jane
