Need ancestors of James Brahan (St. Mullins) & Elizabeth Murphy (Templenaboe) both from county Carlow.  Also, Kilkenny for Edward (Edmund) Keogh (Mooncoin Parish) married Honor Healy (b 1828).  Honor's parents are William Healy and Mary Gaule ( b 1800?) both Mooncoin Parish.  These are as far back as I found, would like further information as to all of their parents, etc...  Any help would be appreciated.

James Brahan & Elizabeth Murphy had at least 6 children:

Anne

Pierce (b 1860) - my great grandfather.

Edward

Bridget

Michael

Julia

Thank you

  • Hi Ellen,

I will be able to give some information James & Elizabeth Brahan from St. Mullins Parish Records.

I found the Marriage record for James Brahan and Elizabeth Murphy (Bahana), married on Nov. 1st, 1857. Witnesses: Daniel Doyle & Mary Brahan.

I found the Baptismal Records all the above named children except Julia.

Ann Brahan, Bahana, baptised Aug. 30, 1857, illeg. Parents: James Brahan & Elizabeth Murphy. Sponsors: John Doyle & Margaret Doyle.

Pierce Brahan, Bahana, baptised June 26, 1860. Parents: James Brahan & Elizabeth Murphy. Sponsors: Edward Brahan & Catherine Curran.

Edward Brahan, Templenabo, baptised Oct 12, 1862. Parents: James Brahan & Elizabeth Murphy. Sponsors: Patt Murphy & Honoria Murphy.

Bridget Brahan, Templebo, baptised Jan 6, 1865. Parents: James Brahan & Betty Murphy. Sponsors: John Brahan & Mary Brahan.

Julia – I could not find a record for her.  Do you know what year she was born? Perhaps, she was missed when the records were transcribed.

    Their father:

James Brahan, Templenabo,  was baptised on Aug 14, 1823. Parents: Ned Brahan & Nancy Dwire. Sponsors: James Kealy & Pegy  Ryan.

    Their mother:

Elizabeth Murphy, Bahana, was baptised on April 18, 1828. Parents: Martin Murphy & Bridget Nowlan.  Sponsors:  Laurence & Margaret Doyle.

I hope this fills in some of the gaps for you.

    Regards,

    Bridie

Since you found so much on this side can you help with the other side?  My great grandmother was Ellen Kehoe (Keogh)  her parents were Edmund Keogh & Honor Healy.  Honor's parents are William Healy and Mary Gaule.  So anything behing Edmund(Edward) Keogh including  his birth date would be good. As well as behind William Healy and Mary Gaule.  Ellen Kehoe was born in Kilkenny, Mooncoin Parish.

See attached from Mooncoin Parish, this is all I know.

    Thank you so much again

  • Hi Ellen,

I'm glad that you were happy with the Brahan/Murphy research from St. Mullins parish.

I would love to be able to help you with the Keogh/Healy research in Mooncoin parish but I only have access to records from St. Mullins parish where I live.

The work done by Kilkenny Archaeological Society for you is excellent. You could ask them to do further research for you, to try to go back further. But first I think you should contact Mooncoin Parish Office, http://homepage.eircom.net/~mooncoinparish/, this is the link to their website. Under Contact Us they have a form where you can fill in your query. The search and information may be free or they may require a search fee or donation for their services.

Wishing you the best of luck with your search.

    Regards,

    Bridie

Thank you so much, yes, the Brahan info was fantastic, you gave me pieces that I did not have before.  My mother is 89, had a debilitating stroke in 2006 when we had a 30 day vacation planned to do this research in Ireland.  She doesn't speak, and when I told her what you had found she was very excited.an  Pierce Brahan is my mother's grandfather.

    Thank you

  • Hi Ellen,

I see what happened - the "this" from the next phrase got attached to the link by mistake, sorry. The correct link is: http://homepage.eircom.net/~mooncoinparish/  I hope you will be able to log on now.

I'm sorry to hear that your Mom had such a debilitating stroke and I'm really glad that the Brahan/Murphy information gave her some joy. Descendents of those Murphy's still live in Bahana, continuing to farm there. I think there is only one elderly Brahan man living in the parish now,  they have not lived in Templenaboe in recent memory.

I hope You will be able to contact Mooncoin parish office now.

    Regards,

    Bridie

  • ,Bridie:

Thank you, I was able to get to Mooncoin.  Do you know Michael & Maura Doyle?  Michael was helping me before mom had her stroke.  We were coming to speak to Nellie Brahan, Michael Brahan wouldn't talk to my mom when she was there a few years earlier because he thought we were coming to claim the farm.  When Pierce came here apparently every time someone died, they wrote him and asked him what he wanted to do and he kept telling them he wasn't interested.  Finally he just stopped writing back.  Apparently Michael is a descendent of his brother Michael and figured we were coming to get the farm..  We were just interested in the genealogy and wanted to know names etc.....  Michael Doyle said Nellie Brahan worked or owned a local bar and would talk to us.  We never made it.  I have kept in touch with Michael Doyle all these years, since 2006.....  I want to thank you for you help, some day I will get there.  I want to go to the cemetery and see if we have any Brahan's there.  My mother did work with father Auchney(? sp) when she was there and he gave her some information.....  My best friend owns a farm in Ireland tho she lives in England, her sister lives on the farm in Ireland.  She was going to take us all around Ireland, along the coast, then the last week to Carlow and Kilkenny.  My mother has never seen Giant's Causeway and I wanted to take her there.  She will never see it now, but I will do that trip after my mother passes and I will go there and tell her all about it, she will hear me.....ou
