I am looking for information on Edward Ranson and Anne Young and their parents.  Edward (of Killacreeney, Parish of Ashfield) and Anne (of Gartenan, Parish of Bailieboro) were married on 26 August 1851 at Cootehill in the Wesleyan Chapel.  Anne died in Ballieborough in 1922.  I believe that she was also born in Cavan, Ireland in 1832 and that her father’s name was George Young.  I have no details of her mother.  I have no details of where Edward was born and died but believe he was born in 1817 and died in 1907. I believe his father’s name was Joseph Ranson but have no details of his mother.  I am assuming he may have also still been living in Baillieborough when he died.

My great Uncle told me that they lived at Killacreeny which I was told was where the Ranson Ancestral home was located. He also told me that my grandfather was born and whislt in Ireland lived in a home at the “Willows”.  The 1901 Census gives details of a house in Greaghnamale, Bailieborough, Cavan.  I would also be really pleased to receive any information regarding these homes and whether they are still standing and what they look like if they are.

  • Linda, I wish to acknowledge your request, I will do a some research for you, but give me a week or so.  I did put Ranson in & searched it on 1911 census & it occurs 53 times, there is a Henry Ranson, born in Co Cavan a Methodist Minister in Tyrone, he looks as if he has moved around quite a bit & the name is not in the current phone book.

  • Henry John F. Ranson (1866-1948) was a Methodist Minister and a son of Edward and Anne.  Look forward to hearing from you with any other information you may find.  Regards, Linda

  • Hi Linda,

I have been in touch with a Fred Gilmore, who now is the owner of the land the Youngs once owned in Gartnaneane.  He said there is the remains of a house on the land, however at the moment the lane  is very wet, but when he gets a chance  he will get a photo of it & send it to me &  I will send it to you.  I have made no head way on Ranson.  I just want to check, is it the Ranson house that was called  "Willows" ?

Fred said that the title documents of this property are with his solicitor & when he gets a chance he will  look at them & see what names are on them.

If you intend to come to Ireland, myself & Fred Gilmore are both willing to show you around, hopefully the weather will improve (it has been constant rain, all year) and you will see it at its best.

  • Linda, I also attach a link of Transcripts of old Co Cavan papers & Edward is mentioned, if you read the whole page you will find him, though gives you no further details.  These papers give you a insight into the lives that were lived at the time.  Very addictive.

  • Hi Carmel,

Thank you so much for this information.  I look forward to receiving a photo of the Young home and details regarding owners of the property.

I have re-read the letters from Great Uncle Tommy regarding our family in the Bailieborough area.

Apparently the Ranson Family home where Edward and Anne resided was at Killycreeny.  My great grand father, Robert Hamilton Ranson,  married Margaret Buchanon Dawson.  Her parents lived at Cornacarrow “one mile along the road from the Ranson home”.

My grandfather was raised in a home at “Wilton” and spent holidays with his grandparents at the home at Killacreeny.   The 1911 Census shows my great grandfather's address as Greaghnamale.

We were actually in Ireland In 2011 but I am hoping we might manage to get back there next year.  It would great to catch up with you.

    Regards

    Linda

  • Linda, will you give me your email address, I have the photos & possible wont be able to attach them here, alas the house is very derelict, it looks like it was 2 storied but only partial front wall & a side wall.  You will have to give me longer on your Ranson quest as it is a few mile from me.

  • Hi Linda

Perhaps you may not have seen my post on 9 June 2013 regarding my Young/Gilmore family in Bailieborough.

It seems that your ancestor Anne Young Ranson is a sister of my great grandfather George Young.  I have been working on my Bailieborough family over a number of years and have found possibly all of the children born to George Young snr. & Margaret Unknown, who lived in Gartnaneane.  I would really like to find more information about George & Margaret Young, especially Margaret’s maiden name.  After his parents died, George Young jnr. and his wife Jane Gilmore and their children resided in Gartnaneane until they immigrated to Australia with eight children in 1878.

    Regards,

    Sylvia

  • Hi Sylvia,

I did not see your post on 9 June 2013.

Unfortunately I have no information regarding George Young Snr and in fact until I read your post did not know that his wife's name was Margaret.

Thank you for that information.  If I am able to find out any other information I will let you know.

    Regards,

    Linda
