COYLEs in County Cavan. I am looking for the ancestors of Michael COYLE born about 1804 or 1814. He immigrated in May of 1816 arriving 5 weeks and 3 days later at Quebec, Canada. He then travelled immediately to New York City.   There are a Mary, Patrick and Philip COIL listed in the NY Census for 1820. In 1830 Michael COYLE appears on the census for NYC 14th Ward living next door to a Francis DONAHOE who may be his father-in-law or brother-in-law as his wife was a Mary DONAHOE (she had a brother Patrick and sisters Katherine and Elizabeth). In 1830 there is one son under 10. however the list of children I have begins with Katherine born in 1837, Thomas 1839 both in NY, Bernard V. 1849, Elizabeth J 1842, Mary Ann 1845, Peter 1848,  Bridget T. 1852, Ellen 1854, James H. 1855 and Michael 1857 all born in a log cabin on their farm in Meshoppen, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania.    Michael Worked first as a policeman in NYC and then on the canals in PA. He is buried at St. Bonaventure's Cemetery, Auburn Twnp. Susquehanna, PA His grave marker states he was 67 years old and died 13 Jan 1882 but this would make him 15 at the time of his first daughter's birth so his birthdate is questionable. Buried in the same cemetery is an Owen DONAHOE of Mullahoran, CAVAN born 1796 died 27 Dec 1881 but I am not sure if he is related. The following maybe helpful to other searching for COYLES but I do not know where Michael COYLE fits in 1761 Census for County CAVANThomas COYLE  Freehold: Dung Place of abode: Coote hile 1796 Flax Growers list for COYLE:Balintaple: Patrick, JamesBallymakew: Patrick, Patrick, Terence, Terence, Bryan, Hugh, Constantine Din: TerenceDrumlomman: Michael, Mary, Patrick, Denis, James, John, Constantine Drung: Philip, John Killan: PatrickKilsherdney: Owen, NicholasMallycoran (Mullahoran?): Philip ANY HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED

  • Coyle and Donohoe are quite common surnames in both Ballymachugh and Mulloharan. Without knowing townlands it's very difficult to find any kind of useful leads, for such common surnames, so far back.

  • Hello -

I don't know that there is any connection, but I have 2 of the names you mentioned in my family's history.

A Thomas Coyle was sponsor at the baptism of one of my great grandfather's sisters, Mary McArdle in 1854, with Rose Reilly.

A Bernard Coyle was sponsor (with Eleanor Reilly) to his other sister, Eleanor McArdle in 1863.

The children's parents were John McArdle and Bridget Reilly. I've assumed the godmothers were somehow related to Bridget, but I've often wondered how the Coyles fit in.

If I find anything else, I'll post it.

Editing to add that the children were born in Tawlaght, in Cavan (half a dozen different spellings of this in my records) and the baptisms took place at the RC church in the parish of Ballymachugh.

  • Judi,

Thanks so much. Funny thing, my daughter married a Reilley and named their daughter Ellie Rose! I imagine it will take some luck or extensive research to find which Coyle family was Michael's.
