I have been able to locate ancestors starting from Providence, Rhode Island and tracing them back to Ballymachugh, but I have had a rough go of making it past but just a few generations.  I have a john Galligan born in about 1844.  Son of patrick Galligan (b. 1805) and catherine Brody (b. aby 1807.) and patrick is the son of an Edward galligan and a Peggy.  That's all I have been able to round up.  Am I missing a few basic places to continue my searches?

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I don't think you will be able to go back any further. RC parish records for Ballymachugh start in 1837. I did check the 1824 Tithe Applotment listings for Ballymachugh. http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?…

Three Galligans listed including an Edward in Aghakilmore townlnad. (There is a Aghakilmore Lower and Upper). I assume this Edward was the father of Patrick.

  • Roger,

I was never notified of this response from you.  Thank you so much!!!  I appreciate you looking in to this.  I am lucky to have been able to find the specific parish.  Patrick and Catherine put the Aghakilmore and Ballymachue in Cavan ontheir topmbstone in Pawtucket, Providence, Rhode Island.

Glad you finally saw the response. We had a systems problem last summer and fall where you were not notified about a new comment.

  • Well, I actually had to log back in versus getting the notification in my email.  Oops!  In any event I find the site delightful.  Are there documents that have yet to be scanned and indexed?  I am kind of shocked at how recent the grave markers are dated in the Ballymachugh Parish.  Not much even close in terms of dates of my ancestors.  Would they have been interred in a different location or is it acase of a lack of volunteers doing the transcriptions?

  • Ryan:

Can't answer your questions about the grave sites. Why don't you e-mail the parish.

  • Ballymachugh Parish is included in the surviving sections of the 1821 Census of Ireland. When I checked there were 24 Galligans listed. This is a government website and is free. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/  Go to Search Census and put the year, surname, county and parish in the boxes and press search and the list will come up. This might give you more information on the earlier years. My own ancestors are from the townland of Lisduff in this Parish.

  • Hi Emco,

Thank you for sending this nugget to me.  It has been challenging to find this type of information.  I sincerely appreciate the tip here.
